Janine Louise Winant of Coventry Farm, Princeton Township, died Sunday after a long illness.
Born in Caux, Switzerland, she was educated in Switzerland and worked for the Swiss Embassy in London during the wartime period of the 1940s.
An ardent advocate of wildlife, she was a life member of the New Jersey Audubon Society, a Founder’s Society member of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and supported several other organizations committed to the preservation of wildlife.
She was the daughter of the late Jean and Marceline Perret of Montreux, Switzerland; wife of the late John G. Winant and sister of the late Ginette Kelker. The two sisters were the last of the Perret lineage, whose ancestry dates back to the early 1200s in Switzerland.
She is survived by sons John G. Winant Jr. of Princeton and Marion Eppley Winant of West Windsor; and grandchildren Janine C. Winant, Constance T. Winant, Robert J. Winant and Ginette P. Winant.
Graveside service will be 11:30 a.m. Friday at Princeton Cemetery with a reception following at Coventry Farm, 549 The Great Road.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the ASPCA, The Humane Society of the United States, National Wildlife Federation or the New Jersey Audubon Society.
