The Long Branch library will host Black History Month programs and community reading events this month.
Drumming, dancing, singing and stories will take place Feb. 23, 3-4 p.m. Attendees will participate in a program about African/Caribbean culture and learn the traditional movements, songs and dances from Senegal and Cuba while drummers demonstrate exciting rhythms and dancers act out from the regions. Participants can also try their skills on the drums. This will be presented by Senuba Melody at the Main Library on Broadway.
The Big Read will be held March 6, 6 p.m. “A Lesson Before Dying” by Ernest J. Gaines will be discussed at this event. This is presented in association with Brookdale Community College, Center for Holocaust, Human Rights & Genocide Education. Call the library to reserve a copy of the book. This program will take place at the Elberon Branch.
The library also offers classes in citizenship, English as a Second Language (ESL), and computer skills. All classes are free and taught by a knowledgeable and friendly instructor. Registration is not required; however, space is limited, so early arrival is recommended. Everyone is welcome.
A citizenship class will take place 6-7:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, hosted by Jewish and Family Services.
An ESL class be held 6-7:30 p.m. on Wednesdays, at the intermediate level.
An ESL class will also be held 6-7:30 p.m. on Thursdays, at the beginner level.
Basic computer skills classes are offered on Tuesdays from 1:30-2:30 p.m. Participants will learn how to use the mouse and keyboard, and move forward from there, covering other topics such as basic Internet searching and setting up an email account.
