Police charged two out-of-town teens with violating the township’s ban on door-to-door soliciting without a permit on Aug. 17.
Melissa McKnight, 18, of 260 Hughes Road, Grass Valley, Calif., and Tammy Lewis, 19, of 300 Spence St., Fairmont, W.Va., were arrested at DeCamp Drive and Westcott Road at 3:06 p.m. after a resident called police to report them.
Hillsborough Township requires peddlers to have a permit, available from the Township Clerk’s Office.
When the two women were unable to present a permit, they were handcuffed, searched and taken to police headquarters for questioning.
"Normal procedure is for us to take physical custody of people for soliciting and process them at down at headquarters," said Police Capt. Robert Roscoe. "We take soliciting very seriously because of the potential for fraud. We don’t usually issue warnings for soliciting."
The two women had been selling bottled spray-cleaner for Texas-based Hy-Pro Chemical Corp.
At headquarters, the two were separated and Ms. McKnight was questioned. Ms. Lewis indicated she did not wish to waive her rights and was not questioned.
The women’s supervisor, Richard Foutch, posted their bail, set at $110 each.
