Lester R. Smith

   PORT ST. LUCIE, FLA. – Lester R. Smith, 84, died Dec. 9 at St. Lucie Medical Center in Port St. Lucie, Fla.
   Born in Lawrence, he lived in Port St. Lucie 14 years.
   He was owner and operator of the Lawrentonia Service Station more than 25 years and retired from Sears, Roebuck and Co. after 18 years.
   He was a World War II veteran and was founder and first commander of American Legion Post 414 and founder and first president of the Lawrence Township Little League. He was a volunteer firefighter and was active in the Lawrence Township Ambulance Squad. He was a member of the Spanish Lakes tennis club and enjoyed bridge.
   Son of the late Charles and Hattie Smith, brother of the late Stanley J. Russell, Elmer C. Hartwell, Carlton and William Smith and sister of the late Elleanor and Hattie Smith, he is survived by his wife of 60 years, Margaret; a son, Jack of Seattle; a daughter and son-in-law, Peggy and Bill Smith of Hamilton; four grandchildren, Mark, Drew, Jennifer and Kristin; a great-granddaughter; two sisters, Martha Davis and Doris Stanger of Lawrence; two sisters-in-law, Arlene Smith of Port St. Lucie and Eleanor Smith of Lawrence; and nieces and nephews.
   A memorial service was held Wednesday at Roger L. Byrd Port St. Lucie Funeral Home Chapel.
