Virginia E. Hendrickson
Founded breast cancer center
Virginia Emery Hendrickson of Princeton died Tuesday after a long battle with breast cancer. She was 67.
Born in New York City, she and her family lived in Doylestown, Pa. for 15 years before moving to Princeton in 1980.
She was a high school English teacher for a number of years and an editor and freelance writer at Harcourt, Brace and Co., New York City.
In December 1983 she had surgery for breast cancer and a year later founded the Breast Cancer Resource Center at the Princeton YWCA, where she worked for several years as its first director. She was honored by the National Alliance of Breast Cancer Organizations and the Princeton YWCA for her work.
She was a graduate of Rye Country Day School, Wellesley College and received a master’s degree from Vanderbilt University.
She was active in many volunteer activities and boards. She was associate board vice president and board vice president of McCarter Theatre and was an honorary trustee.
She was an active member of the Nassau Presbyterian Church, where she served as a deacon, elder and a member of the Cancer Support Group.
Daughter of the late Virginia and Jackson Emery, she is survived by her husband of 38 years, Robert F. Hendrickson; daughter and son-in-law Karen H. and R. Danial Allan of Sierra Madre, Calif.; daughter Susan E. Hendrickson and son-in-law Robert S. Kohn; son and daughter-in-law Douglas S. and Susan S. Hendrickson of San Francisco; sister Mary E. Custer of Norristown, Pa.; and grandchildren Jason and Sarah of Bethesda, Md.
Private burial will be in Princeton Cemetery.
A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at the Nassau Presbyterian Church, Princeton.

Retired business executive
George A. Chandler of Princeton died Tuesday at The Medical Center at Princeton. He was 71.
Born in Cleveland, he was a 10-year Princeton resident.
He retired in 1989 as president and CEO of Milwaukee-based Aqua Chem Inc., a capital goods company.
He received a bachelor’s degree in economics from Princeton University in 1951 and was captain of the undefeated 1950 football team. He received a master’s degree in business administration from Harvard University.
He worked more than 20 years at the Olin Corp. and later held senior-management positions with Amstar Corp. and American Ship Building before assuming his posts at Aqua Chem.
He was a captain in the 82nd Airborne Division in Korea.
He was a member of the Nassau Club.
Son of Mr. and Mrs. George Alfred Chandler, he is survived by his wife, Sally Topping Chandler; daughters Nancy Chandler Koglmeier of Cincinnati and Elizabeth Chandler Bell of Hopewell; sons David George Chandler of Northfield, Ill. and James Topping Chandler of New York City; sister Elizabeth Chandler Mintos of Dublin, Ohio; and 11 grandchildren.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Trinity Church, 33 Mercer St., Princeton.
Burial will be private.

Longtime Princeton resident
Janet H. Middlebrook of Princeton Township died Wednesday at Tandem Health Care, Lawrence. She was 84.
Born in Pleasantville, N.Y., she was a longtime Princeton resident.
She graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Minnesota.
With her husband, she was a longstanding member of the Springdale Golf Club in Princeton.
Wife of the late William T. Middlebrook Jr., she is survived by sons William T. Middlebrook III of Princeton, John Stephen Middlebrook of West Palm Beach, Fla.; daughter Anne Barringer Weingartner of Princeton; and seven grandchildren.

Former Hopewell resident
LAWRENCE Mildred R. Vaccaro died Sunday at St. Joseph’s Skilled Nursing Center at Morris Hall. She was 88.
Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., she was a 40-year resident of Hopewell, living on her family’s farm. She was a resident of Fort Lauderdale, Fla. for 37 years before moving to Lawrence in 1999.
She was a former member of St. Anthony’s Church in Fort Lauderdale and St. Alphonsis Church in Hopewell.
Wife of the late James G. Vaccaro, mother of the late James G. Vaccaro Jr. and sister of the late Gigi Ruggieri, she is survived by sons Joseph Ruggieri Vaccaro of Steamboat Springs, Colo., David Anthony Vaccaro of Knoxville, Tenn. and John Francis Vaccaro of Matthews, N.C.; daughters Marie Veronica Vaccaro of Columbus, Mildred Anne Clancey of Nashville, Tenn., Margaret Elaine Slugocki of Fort Lauderdale, Fla. and Jeanne Vaccaro Hassell of Hackettstown; 17 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Our Lady of the Rosary Chapel at Morris Hall, 1 Bishops’ Drive, Lawrence.
Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Hopewell.
Visiting hours will be 7 to 9 p.m. today at The Mather-Hodge Funeral Home, Princeton.
