Joseph G. Kappel Jr.
Mr. Kappel, 70, of Middletown, died May 12 at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. Born in St. Louis, he resided in Middletown most of his life. He was a retired engineer at Telcordia Tech, Red Bank, where he had worked since 1985. Prior to that, he was employed at Bell Labs, Holmdel, from 1960-85. He was a communicant of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, New Monmouth section of Middletown. He was a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Engineering Society. He was predeceased by his wife, Ann Klien Kappel in 1991. He is survived by a son, Matthew Kappel of Long Branch; two daughters and sons-in-law, Catherine and Bryan Hall of Olney, Md., and CDR Margaret Ryan M.D., USN, and Terrance Ryan of San Diego, Calif.; a sister, Elizabeth Malon of St. Louis; five grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. A funeral liturgy was offered at St. May’s Church. Burial was at Fair View Cemetery, Middletown. Arrangements were by John F. Pfleger Funeral Home, Middletown.
Sharon M. Young
Mrs. Young, 50, of Tinton Falls, died May 12 at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank, following a lengthy illness. Born and raised in Monmouth County, she resided in Tinton Falls the past nine yeas. She was a director at Thompson Financial, New York City. Prior to that, she was employed at Dow Jones, New York City, for 18 years. She was predeceased by her father, Richard V. Young in 2001. She is survived by her husband, Michael DeBello; her mother, Grace Young; her sister and brother-in-law, Carol and Richard Augusty of Shrewsbury; a sister, Joan Mayer of Spring Lake Heights; two nieces; and a nephew. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. James Roman Catholic Church, Red Bank. Interment was at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Middletown. Arrangements were by John E. Day Funeral Home, Red Bank. Alma Lou Hoogland
Mrs. Hoogland, 70, of Oceanport, died May 15 at home. She was born and raised in Rochester, N.Y. She was an adjunct professor of English at Brookdale Community College, Lincroft section of Middletown, retiring in 1998. Prior to that, she taught in U.S. Army education centers in Germany and stateside to help soldiers obtain high school diplomas. She was a 20-year volunteer in the religious education program at the Post Chapel, Fort Monmouth, Eatontown. She was predeceased by her mother, Frances Chambery. She is survived by her husband of 47 years, Chaplain Col. John J. Hoogland, USA Ret., her father, Louis Roberts of Rochester, N.Y.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Julie and Phil Warren of Albuquerque, N.M., and Robin and Tom Richardson of Spokane, Wash.; a son and daughter-in-law, Eric and Ruth Hoogland of Indianapolis, Ind.; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Frank and Doris Roberts of Grand Rapids, Mich.; David and Cindy Roberts of Wheaton, Ill.; and Douglas and Margorie Roberts of Rochester; and seven grandchildren. Visitation will be May 20 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at Braun Funeral Home, Eatontown. A funeral service will be May 21 at 10 a.m. at the funeral home, followed by interment at Arlington (Va.) Edith Cope Jones
Mrs. Jones, 78, of Red Bank, died May 13 at Bayshore Community Hospital, Holmdel. Born in Atlantic City, she resided in Rumson prior to moving to Red Bank 13 years ago. She was a homemaker. She was a member of the Monmouth County Historical Society and The Guild of Creative Art, Shrewsbury. She enjoyed art, sailing and quilting. She is survived by her husband of 58 years, David Jones; three daughters, Cornelia Bixby of Phoenix, Catharine Abel of Fair Haven, and Ann Silva of Vineyard Haven, Mass.; a son, Stephen Jones of Naarden, Netherlands; a brother, Paul M. Cope of Germantown, Pa.; and 11 grandchildren. Arrangements were by John F. Pfleger Funeral Home, Middletown. James H. Cavanaugh
Mr. Cavanaugh, 72, of Shadow Lake, Middletown, died May 7 at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., he had resided in Rumson for 30 years before moving to Shadow Lake three years ago. Mr. Cavanaugh was a mail carrier in Rumson for 30 years, retiring in 1992. He served with the U.S. Marines during the Korean War. He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Noreen F. Sullivan Cavanaugh. The John E. Day Funeral Home, Red Bank, was in charge of arrangements. Mary Virginia “Jenny” Rix
Mrs. Rix, 48, of Tinton Falls, died April 19 at Monmouth Medical Center, Long Branch. Born in Denver, she resided in Tinton Falls the past 11 years. She was a former teacher of blind and visually handicapped children in Abilene, Texas, following her graduate work at Texas Tech University, Lubbock. She also did Christian missionary work and taught in Singapore prior to her marriage in 1985. She was a member of the Monmouth Church of Christ, Tinton Falls, and supported her husband as minister of the church. She was involved in the church’s ministries, community outreach and music. She is survived by her husband, Charles M. Rix of Tinton Falls; a son, Nathan K. Rix of Tinton Falls; a daughter, Mary Abigail “Abby” Rix of Tinton Falls; her parents, John and Virginia Green Alley of Springfield, Mo.; a brother and sister-in-law, David and Judy Allen of St. Paul, Minn.; a sister and brother-in-law, Becky and Kerry Holton of York, N.H.; her mother- and father-in-law, Martha and Cecil Rix of Houston; and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service was celebrated at Monmouth Church of Christ. Interment was at Elliott Hamil Garden of Memories Cemetery, Abilene, Texas. Arrangements were by John E. Day Funeral Home, Red Bank.
