EDITORIAL: Join us in aiding our neighbors

New fund created to help South Brunswick victims of Sept. 11 terror attacks.

Sept. 11 is a day none of us will forget.
When terrorists used American jetliners as bombs to take down the Twin Towers and attack the Pentagon, they not only killed thousands but they reminded us of how important our aid can be to our neighbors.
First-aiders and police from around the region headed north to New York to assist in the rescue and search efforts. Local schools and other groups collected money and material to aid the rescue workers and the families affected.
   Those efforts continue.
Now it’s time for us to mobilize on behalf of local families.
While most of us will be able to get on with our lives, at least three South Brunswick families directly affected by the tragedy cannot. They lost a husband, a wife, a father or a mother. And they need our help.
That’s where The September 11th Community Fund comes in.
The fund was created when school officials sought to aid several children who lost parents during the tragedy. Those officials called Welfare Director LouAnne Wolf, who in turn called the South Brunswick Post. At the same time, Police Benevolent Association Local 166, which represents township police officers, had created its own fund. The decision then was made to join forces.
A meeting was convened with representatives from the township, township social services, the school district, the St. Vincent DePaul Society at St. Augustine of Canterbury R.C. Church, the PBA and the Post to discuss how to proceed. The Clergy Association and the Human Relations Commission also have signed on to help.
   Now its your turn.
So far, at least three families — with a total of seven children ranging in age from about 4 months to middle-school age — have lost a husband, wife, father or mother. They need some support while they are making arrangements for their future.
We know many of our readers in South Brunswick have made contributions to other organizations, including the Red Cross, helping those in New York City. But we also want to encourage members of the community to help their own.
We are asking residents and businesses to contribute to The September 11th Community Fund. Proceeds from the fund will go to the South Brunswick families most directly affected. Contributions will be tax deductible.
   Contributions can be sent to:
The September 11th Community Fund, Box 45, Monmouth Junction, N.J. 08852.
Anything you can do would be appreciated.
