Once again this year, woodworking students at Hopewell Valley Central High School have made specially designed toys for young children with disabilities.
The toys were packaged by the students and donated to Project Child, a county agency, at the high school Monday afternoon. Project Child will distribute the toys to needy, special-needs youngsters.
Woods teacher Angelo Anastasio said about 30 of his woodworking students were involved in the project this year. Each student made a toy by working from a blueprint. As students progressed through their individual toy-making projects, they were taught the safe use of nine pieces of power equipment, such as the band saw.
"In addition to getting instruction on how to build the toys, the students worked cooperatively with one another on this," Ms. Anastasio said. "I encourage that kind of thing throughout the year in this course."
He added that this is the fifth year Central High students have made and donated toys to Project Child. For six years prior to hooking up with Project Child, CHS gave the toys to other groups serving needy children in the area.
