The Princeton Borough Police Department is in mourning over the death of a fellow officer.
"We’re all taking it very hard," said Princeton Borough Police Chief Charles Davall. "We worked with Ed for 16 years and he’s part of our family."
Detective Edward Sullivan apparently took his own life at his Washington Township residence on Sunday. He was found with a gunshot wound, according to police.
The cause of death is still under investigation, according to the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office.
Detective Sullivan spent most of his career in the patrol division before moving up to the detective bureau, the chief said.
"He was an outstanding officer and detective and more than that he was an outstanding person," Chief Davall said.
The department, with just over 30 members, also extends its thoughts and prayers to Detective Sullivan’s family, the chief said.
Detective Sullivan was laid to rest Thursday following a service at St. Paul Roman Catholic Church in Princeton.
