Obituaries for week of April 3

Barbara Volz
   Barbara Lengenfelder Volz, 52, of Ewing Township, died March 25 in Compassionate Hospice at St. Francis Medical Center.
   Born in Trenton, she resided most of her life in Lawrenceville and also had been a resident of Albuquerque, N.M., and Morrisville, Pa., before moving to Ewing Township 10 years ago.
   She was a graduate of Lawrence High School and attended Slippery Rock College majoring in library science.
   Sister of the late Timothy Lengenfelder, she is survived by a son, Brian Volz; a granddaughter, Breanna Volz; her parents, John and Gloria Burchell Lengenfelder; her former husband, Robert Volz; a brother, John Lengenfelder, and his companion, Nancy Ainslie; and a sister and brother-in-law, Debra and Dr. Albert Chiarmonti.
   Also surviving are three aunts and an uncle, Doris Hicks, Betty Lou Tobin, Ruby and Charles Burchell and several nieces and nephews.
   The funeral was held Saturday from Poulson & Van Hise Funeral Directors, 650 Lawrence Road.
   Burial was in Fountain Lawn Memorial Park in Ewing Township.
J. Albert deBlois
   J. Albert deBlois, Jr., 80, of Morrisville, Pa., died March 25 at Chandler Hall Friends Nursing Home, Newtown, Pa.
   Born in Trenton, Dr. deBlois was a lifelong area resident. He was a graduate of Trenton Catholic High School and graduated from Villanova University and the Georgetown University Medical School. Dr. DeBlois practiced for over 40 years in the Trenton area, first as a general practitioner and later as an obstetrician, delivering over 3,000 babies.
   Son of the late J. Albert, Sr., and Anna Devaney deBlois, father of the late Dr. J Albert deBlois, III, and husband of the late Barbara Escher deBlois, he is survived by his wife, Elizabeth A. Boyd deBlois; six sons and three daughters-in-law, Dr. Michael R. and Lynn deBlois of Walcott, Iowa, Robert G. deBlois of Brant Beach, N.J., Christopher D. and Judith Sweeney deBlois of Mullica Hill, N.J., Patrick K. and Phyllis Wentworth deBlois of Tuckerton, N.J., and David A. and Thomas J. deBlois, both of Morrisville, Pa.; a daughter and son-in-law, Donna and George Kudra, Jr. of Washington Crossing, Pa.; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Noel and Evelyn deBlois of Trenton, N.J., Donald and Eileen deBlois of Groveville, N.J., and Dr. Gerry and Doris deBlois of Lawrenceville; a sister and brother-in-law, Germaine and John Crush of Levittown, Long Island; 10 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
   Funeral Mass was March 28 at Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church. Interment followed in Our Lady of Lourdes Cemetery, Hamilton Township.
   Memorial contributions may be made to St. Francis Medical Center, 601 Hamilton Avenue, Trenton, NJ, or to Chandler Hall Friends Nursing Home, Buck Rd. And Barclay St., Newtown, PA 18940.
Samuel Gray
   Samuel S. Gray, Jr., 93, a lifelong resident of Newtown, Pa., and prominent Doylestown attorney, died March 22 at Pennswood Village in Newtown, Pa.
   Mr. Gray attended George School and graduated from Mercersburg Academy, Yale University and Temple University School of Law in 1937.
   During World War II, he served with Patton’s Third Army fighting in the Battle of the Bulge. Following his assignment as commandant at Buchenwald Concentration Camp, he assumed responsibilities as officer in charge of the liberation of Flossenburg Concentration Camp in Czechoslovakia.
   He is survived by his wife, Josephine Davis Gray of Pennswood Village and Cliff Island, Maine. He survived by sons and daughters Martha G. Larson, Massillon, Ohio, Elizabeth G. Hollingworth and husband Dick, Muskogee, Okla., John F. Gray and wife Liz, Proctor, Vt.; Susan E. G. Moll and husband Ken, Lawrenceville; step-daughters Susan Davis Atkinson, Bristol, Pa.; and Mary Ellen Davis McNitt and husband Dave, Thornton, Pa.; grandchildren Heather Larson Viens and husband Rick, Holly Larson Singer and husband Scott, Peter C. Larson, Scott W. Larson, Erin E. Gray, Stefanie M. Gray, Peter Gray Moll and Jeffrey Gray Moll; and step-grandson David McNitt.
   He was the great-grandfather to Paige Elizabeth and Brett Larson Viens and Jenna Ray and Jacob Andrew Singer. His wife of 56 years, Martha W. Dinsmore, died in 1998.
   In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate memorial contributions to the Heritage Conservancy, 85 Old Dublin Pike, Doylestown, PA 18901; the Newtown Library Company, 114 Centre Ave., Newtown, PA 18940; or to the Employee Educational Assistance Fund, Pennswood Village, 1382 Newtown-Langhorne Rd., Newtown, PA 18940.
   A memorial service was held Friday at Penn Hall, Pennswood Village, Newtown, Pa. Family arrangements were under the direction of Swartz/Givnish Funeral Home.
Ruth Toomey
   Ruth Dorety Toomey, 85, of Lawrenceville, died Sunday at home.
   Born in Lawrenceville, she was a lifelong resident.
   She was a graduate of Cathedral High School and Rider College.
   She was formerly employed by Richard C. Chamberlin, Esq., and subsequently the Unemployment Compensation Commission for the state, for which she was secretary for the chief of benefits.
   While raising her daughters, she served as a volunteer for the P.B.A. Local 119, the American Legion Post 414 Ladies Auxiliary and St. Ann’s Roman Catholic Church.
   Ruth and her sister Elizabeth organized the Eldridge Park School library.
   Daughter of the late James A. and Elizabeth Clinton Dorety and sister of the late Gertrude Uhler, she is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Alice and Richard Bull of Stroudsburg, Pa., and Ann and Donald Bugdal of Hamilton; a sister Elizabeth Strapp of Lawrenceville; a brother, James Dorety of Thomasville, N.C., four grandchildren Joseph and Patrick Bull and Andrew and Colleen Bugdal and many nieces and nephews.
   The funeral will be held Friday at 9 a.m. from Poulson & Van Hise Funeral Directors, 650 Lawrence Rd., Lawrenceville.
   Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. Ann’s Church at 10:15 a.m.
   Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Hamilton.
   Friends may call on Thursday from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Leon A. Cohen
   Leon A. Cohen, 80, died March 27, at his residence.
   Born in New York City, he was a resident of Mercer County most of his life before recently moving to Maryland.
   Mr. Cohen attended Columbia University and was the manager of The Shield newspaper for many years. He later was Comptroller of Innovative Programming Associates before retiring.
   Mr. Cohen was a founding member of Young Israel of Lawrenceville and a member of Zionist organization of America and Mizarchi. He was an Army veteran of World War II.
   Son of the late Charles and Evelyn Cohen, he is survived by his wife Rachel Rabinowitz Cohen; two sons and daughters-in-law Morton and Wendy Cohen of Lawrenceville and Dr. Barry and Liza Cohen of Silver Spring, Mary.; a daughter and son-in-law Elaine and Nolan Sigal of Los Altos, Calif.; a brother, Robert Cohen of Pittsburgh, Pa.; a sister Geraldine Silverstein of Yardley, Pa.; nine grandchildren, Benjamin, Abagail, Jason, Jordan, Erica and Courtney Cohen, and Joshua, Yaron and Adam Sigal; and several nieces and nephews.
   Funeral services were held on Friday at Orland’s Ewing Memorial Chapel, 1534 Pennington Road, Ewing Township.
   Burial followed at Congregation People of Truth Cemetery, Hamilton.
   The period of mourning was observed at the residence of Morton and Wendy Cohen, Lawrenceville.

Catherine Mescall
   Catherine E. Mescall, 93, of Lawrenceville died Saturday in Capital Health System at Fuld.
   Born in Brooklyn, New York, she moved to Ireland at the age of nine and returned to the United State at the age of 21. Since that time, she had resided most of her life in Lawrenceville.
   Ms. Mescall retired in 1975 from Trenton State College where she worked in food service for 22 years.
   She was a member of St. Michael’s Church in Trenton and the Mount Carmel Guild.
   Daughter of the late Peter and Ann Phelban Murry and wife of the late Patrick J. Mescall, she is survived by two daughters, Ann M. Lebkowski and Kay DeAngelo; and six grandchildren Benny, Lynn and Michael DeAngelo and Kim and John Lebkowski and Cathy and her husband Gene Cuff. Also surviving are two great grandchildren, John Michael Jerback and Kelsey Catherine Cuff, and several nieces and nephews.
   The funeral will be today (Thursday) at 8 a.m. from Poulson & Van Hise Funeral Directors, 560 Lawrence Road, Lawrenceville.
   A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9 a.m. in St. Michael’s R.C. Church in Trenton.
   Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Hamilton Township.
Edna D. Butt
   Edna Dillon Butt died Monday at Chandler Hall, Newtown, Pa. She was 83.
   She was a lifelong Trenton area resident and attended Trenton High School.
   She enjoyed making many friends on trips to Atlantic City.
   Daughter of the late Emma Cheston Grainger and Alfred C. Grainger, wife of the late Howard Dillon and John Butt, she is survived by daughters and son-in-law Susan Sweeney and Karen and Joseph Schwendt of Princeton; grandchildren Tracy Cook, Shane Sweeney, Kelly Glenfield, Joseph Schwendt III and Beth Schwendt; and great-grandchildren Tara Sweeney, Jordan Sweeney and Ryan Glenfield. She lived for many years under the care of a special aunt, Lillian Cheston.
   A memorial service will be held on 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Kimble Funeral Home, 1 Hamilton Ave., Princeton, with the Rev. George Lynch, pastor of Cavalry Baptist Church in Hopewell, officiating.
   Burial will follow in Princeton Cemetery.
