EAST WINDSOR — A Bennington Drive resident was charged with two counts of aggravated assault after she allegedly attacked a police officer that had been called to aid her.
According to police, at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 23, Patrol Officer James May responded to a report of an assault in a Bennington Drive home where he found the victim, Anjali Sanga, 41, on the porch. Police said Ms. Sanga had been struck several times by John Tino, 48, also from Bennington Drive, and her face was bleeding.
While investigating the incident, Officer May approached Ms. Sanga, who was being treated by emergency medical personnel, at which time she reportedly spit blood onto Officer May’s face.
Officer May attempted to wash his eyes and ears, then was transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in Hamilton.
He was later released with numerous medications.
Both Mr. Tino and Ms. Sanga were transported to Mercer County Correction Center.
Mr. Tino was charged with aggravated assault and later was released on $75,000 bail.
Ms. Sanga was released on $25,000 bail. Neither was granted a 10 percent option.
Both Ms. Sanga and Officer May will be tested for communicable diseases.
Casey DeBlasio, spokeswoman for the Mercer County prosecutor’s office, said that Ms. Sanga was charged once for assaulting Officer May and again for attacking him with bodily fluids.
She added that Ms. Sanga’s medical records were not available, but if it were to turn out that she had some sort of transmissible disease, her charges could become more severe.
As of Wednesday, no court date had been set for Ms. Sanga, Ms. DeBlasio said.
