Bernice Miller

CANTON, Mass. Bernice "Basie" Glaser Miller died Dec. 30. She was 89.
A Princeton resident beginning in 1939, she moved to Ocean Grove in Canton five years ago.
She was a former speech and drama teacher at Princeton High School and a former member of the Princeton Regional Board of Education.
She was president of the League of Women Voters, a vice president of the Princeton Chapter of Deborah Hospital, one of the founders of the Jewish Center of Princeton, and director of the Princeton United Jewish Appeal.
She was also instrumental in the construction of the John Witherspoon Middle School and was very active in working for the consolidation of Princeton Borough and Princeton Township.
A graduate of New York University, she received a master’s degree from Columbia University
Wife of the late attorney William Miller and the late Ralph Porges, sister of the late Sidney Glaser, she is survived by daughter and son-in-law Susan and Steven Sewall of Lincoln, Mass.; son and daughters-in-law Fred and Lee Miller of Louisville, Ky.; and Lowell Miller and Gail Bradney of Woodstock, N.Y.; sister and brother-in-law Selma and Samuel Reiner of New York City; sister-in-law Martha Glaser of Boynton Beach, Fla.; cousins Barbara and Howard Malloy of Stamford, Conn., and Betty Young of Rumson; grandchildren Kimberly Sachs, Derek Sewall, Tara Rozen, Jessica Rath, and Finn Alvaro; six great-grandchildren; and nieces Louise Gutheil, Nancy Ingram, Janet Taxin and Irene Margulics.

Harry Dowling
Former Montgomery resident
LAC DU FLAMBEAU, Wis. Harry Dowling died Wednesday at Wausau Hospital, Wausau, Wis. He was 75.
Born in Paterson, he was a former Montgomery Township resident.
He retired from the U.S. Postal Service in 1990. He had earlier worked for several publishing companies and operated his own business.
He served on the Montgomery Township Board of Education and the Montgomery Board of Health for nine years and was active in local politics.
After moving to Wisconsin, he became active in the Lac du Flambeau Lion’s Club, St. Anthony’s Men’s Club and was a lay minister at the church. He was a volunteer at Head Start, the domestic abuse shelter and provided respite care for families at an area hospice.
A history buff, he enjoyed reading, traveling and spending time with his family.
Son of the late Mary and Harry Dowling and stepfather Ernest Linder, he is survived by his wife of 52 years, Dorothy Dowling; son and daughter-in-law Matthew Dowling and Tammy Slater; daughters and sons-in-law Leslie and Michael Masterson, Holly Dowling and Todd Meurer, and Megan and James Miller; sister Evelyn Ferrara; Matthew Dowling’s former wife, JoAnn Dowling; and nieces Patty and Kathleen.

Insurance executive
WEST WINDSOR Jonathan Mark Farber died Sunday at Hackensack University Medical Center. He was 55.
Born in Washington, D.C., he resided in New Mexico, Georgia, Korea and California before moving to New Jersey 17 years ago.
A longtime member of the insurance community of the New York and New Jersey area, he was associated with the Inland Marine Underwriters Association. A the time of his death he was assistant vice president at Crum & Forster of Morristown.
He completed graduate school at Emory University and was a member of the New Mexico Highlands University Alumni Association and of Phi Kappa Tau.
After completing his education, Mr. Farber entered the Peace Corps serving in Korea.
He enjoyed motorcycling, golf and travel.
Son of the late David and Evelyn Weiner Farber, he is survived by his wife of 25 years, Kathleen M. Barter Farber of West Windsor; daughter Sarah J. Farber of Carrboro, N.C.; son Alex Farber at home; sister and brother-in-law Beth and Warren Rubin; aunts Esther Bondy, Betty Kupinsky and Shirley Weiner; uncle Nat Woolf; brother-in-law Robert Barter of Schertz, Texas; and many cousins.
The funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the Saul Colonial Home, 3795 Nottingham Way, Hamilton Square.
Calling hour is 10 a.m. until time of service.
Interment will be 1 p.m. Friday at Mt. Lebanon Cemetery, 9500 Riggs Road, Hyattsville, Md.

WEST WINDSOR Joan Schorr died Monday at the Abrams Residence, Ewing.
Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., she was a resident of Brooklyn and Allentown, Pa., before moving to West Windsor five years ago.
She was a member of Congregation Beth Chaim and enjoyed the theater and cards.
Daughter of the late Saul and Blanche Goldberg, wife of the late Robert Schorr, she is survived by daughter and son-in-law Ilene and Edward O’Brien of West Windsor; son Warren Lederberg of Naples, Italy; and grandchildren Andrew and Lauren O’Brien.
The funeral will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Congregation Beth Chaim, 329 Village Road, West Windsor. Burial will follow at Keneseth Israel Cemetery, Allentown, Pa.

James J. Carey of Princeton died Thursday at home. He was 62.
Born in New York, he was a former resident of Summit and had lived in Princeton for 10 years.
He was senior vice president of Citigroup, where he worked for 43 years.
Son of the late James Carey, he is survived by his mother, Wilma Ernst Carey; wife Jacqueline Cone Carey of Princeton; daughter Heather Carey of New York City; stepdaughter and her husband Christine and David Wade of Plainsboro; stepson and his wife Patrick and Kristin Kirschner and stepson Lowell Kirschner, all of Plainsboro; and sister Linda King of Coral Springs, Fla.

HAMPTON Nellie Mackoul died Thursday. She was 88.
Born in Lebanon, she was a homemaker.
She was a member of the Women’s Club and Women’s Guild of Hillsdale, a volunteer at Pascack Valley Hospital Thrift Shop and a member of the Ladies Auxiliary.
She was a parishioner at St. Anthony’s Eastern Orthodox Church in Bergenfield.
Wife of the late Theodore R. Mackoul, she is survived by sons and daughters-in-law Sabry J. and Anne Mackoul of Princeton and Theodore R. Jr. and Amy Mackoul of Riverdale; daughter and son-in-law Kathleen A. and Ralph Haselmann of Hamilton; 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

WEST WINDSOR Daniel H. Howard died Sunday at University Medical Center at Princeton. He was 88.
Born in Newark, he was a Newark resident before moving to Deal, Malibu, Calif., Manalapan, Fla. and West Windsor.
He was a salesman for Nash Aluminum and several other companies.
He was an Army radio corpsman during World War II.
He enjoyed chess, bridge, photography and, having earned a pilot’s license, flying.
Husband of the late Ethel Howard, he is survived by his second wife, Mildred Howard of West Windsor; daughter and son-in-law Susan and Kenneth Zauber of Princeton; son and daughter-in-law Andrew and Sue Howard of Lawrence; and granddaughter Elana Howard.
The funeral will be 11 a.m. today at Worden-Hoidal Funeral Home, 236 Monmouth Road, Oakhurst.
The family will be sitting shiva at the home of Susan Zauber, 201 Mercer St., Princeton.
