HAMILTON — Anna M. Bird, 84, died Feb. 11 after a brief illness at the Compassionate Care Hospice at St. Francis Medical Center, Trenton.
Born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, she emigrated with her parents and brother to the United States in 1922 during a period of political turmoil and religious oppression following the partition of Ireland. Their ship, the Adriatic, was rocked by an explosion and fire that killed several crew members off the coast of New England.
Mrs. Bird grew up in Trenton before moving to Hamilton upon her marriage in 1949. She was a founding member of Our Lady of Sorrows Parish in Mercerville and regularly attended Mass and participated in church activities.
Mrs. Bird retired after 25 years with The McGraw-Hill Companies in Hightstown.
Throughout her long employment career, she worked at L.A. Young Spring & Wire Company, Sears Roebuck, Helene Fuld Medical Center, and Trenton Trust Bank (later National State Bank).
A 1937 graduate of Trenton High School, she had a wide range of talents and interests. She enjoyed trips to the Jersey Shore, watching baseball games, playing bingo, cooking and baking. She was an adept do-it-yourselfer. She attended many adult school classes to broaden her talents and enjoyed such pastimes as caning and rushing chair seats and making stained glass. She also enjoyed gardening.

She was a strong supporter of Hamilton Township Mayor Glen Gilmore and U.S. Sen. Jon Corzine, (D-NJ). Her Democratic roots are deep and committed. Late one June night in 1968, she drove her six small children to New York City to stand in line for hours outside St. Patrick’s Cathedral until the early-morning hours to pay respects to the late U.S. Senator and presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy.
Like her late husband, she was a "news junkie," leading three of her six children to become journalists. Political and civic issues were frequently the topic at the dinner table.
She had a deep interest in her home country of Ireland and was thrilled when Mayor Gilmore invited her to a fund-raising dinner with Sinn Fein president Gerry Adams in the fall of 2002.
Most recently, she had been actively involved in a neighborhood-based group opposing a proposed sprawl development on a 30-acre wooded field near her home. She had a decades-long special fondness for Martin House, a Trenton-based housing and community services organization associated with the Roman Catholic Diocese of Trenton. She also enjoyed her association with the Hamilton Township Senior Citizens.
