Elise Lufkin, animal adoption advocate and author of the critically acclaimed "Found Dogs: Tales of Strays Who Landed on their Feet," will share stories from her new book, "Second Chances, More Tales of Found Dogs," at a luncheon hosted by SAVE, Princeton’s Animal Shelter, on Tuesday, March 30, from noon to 2 p.m. at the Cherry Valley Country Club, 125 Country Club Drive, Skillman. Tickets cost $45 per person, and seating is limited.
Ms. Lufkin, who lives with Posy, a Norfolk terrier, in the mountains of Idaho, learned about SAVE through a friend, and offered to speak at the luncheon to help raise money for the shelter. After her talk, Ms. Lufkin will answer questions and autograph copies of "Found Dogs." The books cost $20, and all proceeds will be donated to SAVE.
In "Second Chances," Lufkin tells the heartwarming stories of almost 100 unwanted and discarded dogs that greatly enriched the lives of the people who gave them a second chance. The stories from celebrities (Jamie Lee Curtis, Donna Shalala, Mikhail Baryshnikov and Oscar de la Renta) and everyday heroes, among them barbers, ranchers, students, teachers and realtors, tell of found dogs who’ve become service dogs, protectors and friends. The book is illustrated with photographs by Time magazine’s award-winning Diana Walker, and the foreword is by Ms. Curtis.
In addition to providing tales of rescue, Ms. Lufkin provides helpful information for potential pet adopters, including a list of questions to ponder when looking for a dog, and insight from the hundreds of interviews she conducted with pet owners and animal shelter employees.
For animal lovers, it’s inconceivable that so many dogs are abandoned, abused and mistreated; in the United States last year, more than three million dogs and puppies were destroyed in shelters and animal control facilities, and countless others died from accidents, disease and abuse.
To reserve tickets for SAVE’s luncheon, or to place advance orders for copies of Ms. Lufkin’s book, call Sara Nicolls, SAVE’s executive director, at (609) 921-6122, ext. 206.
