MONTGOMERY After two weeks of delays because of bad weather, the Montgomery Summer Concert Series finally kicked off its first musical performance at Montgomery Park under clear skies Wednesday night.
"We couldn’t have asked for better weather," said Karen Zimmerman, township recreation director.
The Carnaby Street band, a throwback band to the ’60s who wore period clothing and performed with vintage guitars and drums, entertained the crowd with a range of ’60s music, including pieces from the Monkees and Nancy Sinatra.
An estimated 300 residents of all ages trickled in to watch the performance at the casual event. While the parking lots were filled with cars, many residents also rode their bikes to the concert.
At the concert, small children ran in circles, danced and played in the crowd, as adults listened, sang along and chatted while the band played. Nearby basketball courts, playgrounds and a baseball field were also filled with young children and teenagers.
"Parents can come for music and watch their children on the playground," said Ms. Zimmerman.
With beach and camping chairs in hand, attendees lugged coolers filled with sandwiches and drinks to the event. One family was even seen eating a rack of ribs.
"It’s a wonderful community event," said Montgomery resident Lesya McIntyre, who brought two friends from North Brunswick. "It sure beats being at work."
"I’ve been wanting to come all summer," said Mary Leslie, a first-time attendee who came prepared with a cooler and bug spray.
The two previously canceled performances have been rescheduled for later dates.
"We’re really keeping our fingers crossed that we have nice weather (for the remaining performances)," said Ms. Zimmerman.
The Infernos, who have entranced Montgomery residents in past summer concerts, are set to dazzle the audience with music that spans three decades from doo-wop to disco to today’s Latin music in a rescheduled performance July 28. Kenny Simmons, a former member of the award-winning group the Commodores, is a member of the Infernos.
Goodfellas, an oldies group that will entertain the crowd with music ranging from doo-wop to the sounds of Frankie Vali and the Four Seasons, has been rescheduled for Aug. 4.
