‘McMansions’ banned in center of Plainsboro

PLAINSBORO — The Township Committee approved an ordinance Wednesday barring the construction of oversized houses, commonly referred to as "McMansions," in an older section of the township.
The zoning amendment prevents the destruction of existing housing stock and preserves the scale and historical nature of established residential neighborhoods in Plainsboro’s R-85 zone. The zone is in the central area of the township including the Maple Avenue and Edgemere Avenue area.
Officials want to avoid homeowners or developers tearing down houses in the R-85 zone to build larger-scale homes.
The amendment focuses mostly on new construction and allows flexibility for current property owners. Residents are not barred from building additions, but the changes must maintain, not detract from, the neighborhood’s character.
Also Wednesday, the committee hired Susan Slavicek as the new court administrator. She starts July 26.
