To the editor:
Do you remember the year Papa Bush ran for the presidency? He became infamous with his campaign statement, "Read my lips, no new taxes." After he won the election, he immediately raised taxes.
With his son, our current president, we are confronted with a case of "like father, like son." It is evident that father and son will tell the voter anything to win the election. George Bush learned his lessons well from Papa Bush. We have been paying a terrible price. George Bush was not truthful about weapons of mass destruction in Iraq and took us to war. After all, war presidents are always popular. Papa was very popular after Desert Storm.
On the front page of a newspaper, dated Oct. 17 is a picture of a man who is going to war in Iraq. What is startling is the headline over his picture. It reads, "Leaving Grandkids Behind, They Head Off To War." What makes this article so disturbing is that this man is 58 years old. The article continues, "By the thousands, soldiers 50 and older are being deployed." Has the Army reached the point of crisis that we must send grandfathers to war? It appears that our ability to recruit is limited.
Every expert indicates this will be a long war. Men and women will be needed. President Bush said publicly there will be no draft. Did he say, "Read my lips?" Is it another case of "like father, like son?"
