Alfred F. Guzzi Sr.
Alfred F. "Fritz" Guzzi Sr., 83, Long Branch died Sept. 4 at Beth Israel Hospital, Passaic. Born in Long Branch, he was a lifelong resident. Mr. Guzzi was the owner and operator of Colonial Fuel Service, Long Branch, retiring in 1984. He served with the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II. He was a parishioner at St. Michael’s Roman Catholic Church, Long Branch. Mr. Guzzi was an exempt fireman, past captain and past president of the Atlantic Engine and Truck Company of the Long Branch Fire Department; a 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus No. 335, Long Branch; and a member of the Long Branch Old Guard. He was also a member of the Allied Building Trades Local 694, Neptune. Mr. Guzzi is survived by his wife, Rose Kurpell Guzzi; a son, Alfred Guzzi Jr. of Long Branch; two daughters, Nancy Montgomery of West Long Branch and Maryanne Squillari of Monmouth Beach; two sisters, Emma Galluccio and Edith Bratton, both Long Branch; and six grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial was offered at St. Michael’s Roman Catholic Church. Entombment was at Woodbine Mausoleum, Oceanport.Doris Oakley Perkins
Doris Oakley Perkins, 85, of Independence, Mo., and formerly of Matawan, died Aug. 22 at Barnes Jewish/St. Peter’s Hospital, St. Peter’s, Mo. Born in Mineola, N.Y., she resided in Montclair, Essex County, and later in Middletown and Matawan before moving to Independence earlier this year. Mrs. Perkins taught languages at Matawan Regional High School for 20 years, retiring in 1979. Prior to that, she taught in Middletown for two years. She served in the U.S. Navy WAVES during World War II at the Navy Department Bureau of Ships, Washington, D.C. She was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church, Matawan, where she served on the Altar Guild. She was also a member of the Episcopal Church Women (ECW), where she was a former member of the vestry and a former senior warden. She was also named a "Women of Honor" by the ECW of the Diocese of New Jersey in 2002. Her memberships included the Jersey Shore WAVES, American Legion, Raritan Post No. 23, Keyport; Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 6761, Cheesequake Village; the League of Women Voters; the National Education Association; and the New Jersey Education Association. She was a volunteer at the Matawan Historical Society, as well as a literacy volunteer with the Monmouth County Board of Social Services. She enjoyed classical music, bridge and time with friends. Mrs. Perkins was predeceased by her husband, George Richard Perkins, in 1975. She is survived by two daughters, Susan J. Perkins of Eatontown, and Virginia Oakley Hudson of Independence, Mo.; a sister, Virginia Garner of Conway, S.C.; and three grandsons. A memorial service will be held Sept. 20 at 1 p.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church, Matawan. Interment with military honors will follow at Forest Green Park Cemetery, Morganville. Nazariah Bland Bowles
Nazariah Bland Bowles, infant daughter of Sherry Bland and William Bowles of Long Branch, died Sept. 11 at Beth Israel Hospital, Newark. In addition to her parents, she is survived by her maternal grandmother and step-grandfather, Sherry Bland and Robert Baldwin; her paternal grandparents, Karen and William Bowles; her great-grandmother, Margie Pack; her great-great-grandmothers, Gladys Anderson and Julia Wheeler, all of Long Branch; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins. A funeral service was held at the Second Baptist Church, Long Branch. Interment was at Monmouth Memorial Park Cemetery, Tinton Falls. Arrangements were by Damiano Funeral Home, Long Branch.
Barbara A. Schmiedeberg
Barbara A. Schmiedeberg, 53, of the Oakhurst section of Ocean Township, died Sept. 9 at Monmouth Medical Center, Long Branch. Born in Jersey City, she resided in South Toms River before moving to Oakhurst 10 years ago. She was an office manager at Capitol Lighting, Eatontown, for 15 years. She is survived by four sons, Jim Schmiedeberg of Florida, Jeff Schmiedeberg and Russ Schmiedeberg, both of Forked River, and Jonathan Schmiedeberg of Oakhurst; her mother, Grace Blum of Brick; her father, Theodore Blum of Pinellas Park, Fla.; and one grandson. A memorial service was held at The Bradley Beach Gazebo. Arrangements were by Damiano Funeral Home, Long Branch.
Linda Booker
Linda Booker, 48, of Long Branch died Sept. 5, at St. Francis Medical Center, Trenton. She was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. Ms. Booker was a bus operator at NJ Transit, where she was employed 12 years. She was predeceased by her father, James DaCruz. She is survived by her children, Lewis and Tanya, and her daughter-in-law, Kutisa; her mother, Virginia DaCruz; two sisters; seven brothers; three grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Eileen D. Carmody
Eileen D. Carmody, 53, of Monmouth Beach died Sept. 5 at Mount Carmel West Hospital, Columbus, Ohio. She was born in Hoboken. She was predeceased by her parents, Daniel F. and Theresa Barteletta Carmody. She is survived by a sister and brother-in-law, Maureen D. and Edward T. Ryan of Monmouth Beach; an aunt, Catherine Dougherty of the Oakhurst section of Ocean Township; and several nieces and nephews. Raymond P. Cetola
Raymond P. Cetola, 36, of Eatontown died Sept. 7 at home. Born in the Bronx, N.Y., he resided in Bayonne prior to moving to Eatontown more than a year ago. He was a corrections officer at East Jersey State Prison, Rahway, for five years. He was predeceased by his mother, Erminia Cetola, in 1997. He is survived by his father, Joseph Cetola of Lakewood; three sisters, Carol Stampoulos of Toms River, Loretta Harmon of Cliffside Park, and Regina Alicea of Howell; and a brother, Joseph M. Cetola of Fishkill, N.Y. A Mass of Christian Burial was offered at St. William the Abbott Church, Howell. Burial was at Ocean County Memorial Park, Toms River.
John J. de Groot
John J. "Jack" de Groot, 75, of Shrewsbury died Sept. 8 at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune. Born in Babylon, N.Y., he resided in Little Silver prior to moving to Shrewsbury in 1973. Mr. de Groot was a retired sales executive at the Stepan Chemical Co., Northfield, Ill., for 32 years. He enjoyed time with his family, gardening and the outdoors, and was also an avid equestrian. He was predeceased by his wife of 30 years, Joan B. Baginski de Groot, in 1984; a sister, Joan Bartow; and a brother, Skip de Groot. Mr. de Groot is survived by five sons and daughters-in-law, Richard and Jeannie de Groot, Peter J. and Lisa de Groot, Robert G. and Sue de Groot, Steven J. and Kathleen de Groot, and John A. "Jay" and Linda de Groot; three daughters and sons-in-law, Anne M. and Eric Krusell of Scituate, Mass., Nancy K. and P.J.
