Montgomery’s senior center to temporarily close for renovations

MONTGOMERY — The Montgomery Senior Center will be closed for renovations from Monday through Jan. 11.
The senior center is located in the Otto Kaufman Community Center on Skillman Road north of the new high school.
Work on the $2.38 million expansion began in September and, when complete, the 16,500-square-foot addition will include a half-basketball court, a dance room, offices and meeting rooms.
Recreation Director Karen Zimmerman said her department will still operate while the center is closed.
Alternative activities will be provided during the renovation, including transportation to shopping and to the Hillsborough Senior Center.
Typically, the senior center is closed between Christmas and New Year’s Day, said Ms. Zimmerman. Because seniors spend much of the time during the holidays with family, said Ms. Zimmerman, "the attendance drops off so much."
Ms. Zimmerman said the construction work at the community center is still on schedule, despite the rising costs and declining availability of steel.
The renovations are "going to make a world of difference. I can’t wait," she said.
The Senior Center is operated by the Somerset County Office on Aging in partnership with Montgomery Township. Admission to center programs and activities is free. The center offers a variety of educational and recreational activities for seniors, including wellness programs and health screenings.
Seniors who wish to line up transportation should call the recreation office at (609) 466-3023.
