SCOTT B. WHEELER, 42, of Houston, Texas, died Sept. 16 at home. Born in Long Branch, he had lived in Freehold before moving to Houston 20 years ago. He was a truck driver for Consolidated Freight Co. He was a 1978 graduate of Freehold Regional High School. He was predeceased by his stepfather, Allen H. Willis; and a sister, Estelle Wheeler Briscoe. He is survived by his wife, Regina Wheeler; a son, Scott Brian Augustus Wheeler, and a daughter, Amber Nicole Wheeler, both of Houston; his mother, Augustine F. Willis of Freehold; his father, Samuel T. Wheeler of Long Branch; a brother, Samuel T. Wheeler Jr. of Miami.
JAMES "JIMMY" LIU, 74, of the Wayside section of Ocean Township died Sept. 29 at the Center for Hospice Care at Monmouth Medical Center, Long Branch. Born in China, he moved to the United States at age 21. He was a restaurateur of 38 establishments, as well as an entrepreneur, owning several stores, real estate and apartments in Long Branch and Asbury Park. He also owned the remainder of the Long Branch boardwalk. He was predeceased by his daughter, Debra Brumley, in 1998. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth "Lizzie" Nason Liu of Wayside; two sons and one daughter-in-law, J.R. Liu of Wayside, and Thomas and Stacy Liu of the Oakhurst section of Ocean Township; a daughter and son-in-law, Tina and Danny Paola of Roselle Park; two brothers, Rui-Liang "Leon" Liu of Flushing, N.Y., and Rui-Shiang Liu of China; four grandchildren; and a niece and nephew. A Mass of Christian Burial was offered at St. Jerome’s Roman Catholic Church, West Long Branch. MARY V. MARTELLI, 79, of Long Branch died Sept. 30 at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. Born in Long Branch, she resided in Asbury Park prior to moving to Long Branch seven years ago. She was a seamstress at Century Sportswear, Long Branch, for 10 years, retiring 15 years ago. She was a parishioner of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Roman Catholic Church, Asbury Park. She was a member of the I.L.G.W.U. She was predeceased by her husband, Anthony C. Martelli, in 2001; and a sister, Rose Fleming. She is survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Georgette and Bob Gant; and several nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews. A funeral service will be held Oct. 4 at 8:30 a.m. at Damiano Funeral Home, Long Branch. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10:15 a.m. at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Roman Catholic Church, Asbury Park. Interment will be at Mount Calvary Cemetery, Neptune. BARBARA EVANS JACOBSON, 58, of Oceanport died Sept. 27 at the Center for Hospice Care at Monmouth Medical Center, Long Branch. Born in Jersey City, she resided in Middletown before moving to Oceanport 34 years ago. She was a guidance counselor at Red Bank Regional High School for 21 years. She was a parishioner of Our Lady Star of The Sea Roman Catholic Church, Long Branch. She was predeceased by her parents, Robert and Constance Ippolito Evans. She is survived by her husband, Barry A. Jacobson of Oceanport; her son, Gregory A. Jacobson of Monmouth Beach; her daughter, Lauren E. Jacobson of Morris Plains; two brothers, Robert Evans of the Lincroft section of Middletown, and Ronald Evans of Middletown; and her sister, Gail Pelusio of the River Plaza section of Middletown. ALEXANDER ADESKAVITZ, 80, of the Belford section of Middletown, died Sept. 23 at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. Born in the New Monmouth section of Middletown, he was a lifelong Belford resident. He was a maintenance worker at Stoney Brook Apartments, Eatontown, for 20 years, retiring in 1992. He also worked on his family’s farm. He was a communicant of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, New Monmouth. He was predeceased by his wife, Carmella Adeskavitz, in 1992; and a brother, Michael Adeskavitz, in 1987. He is survived by his sister, Marion T. Grabowski of Belford; a brother, Stephen Adeskavitz of the Leonardo section of Middletown; and several nieces and nephews.
LOUIS C. "GIGI" BATTISTA, 73, of Oceanport died Sept. 24 at Monmouth Medical Center, Long Branch. Born in New York City, he lived in the Bronx, N.Y., prior to moving to Oceanport 35 years ago. He was a security guard at Shore Condominium Complex, Monmouth Beach. He served with the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was a communicant of St. Dorothea’s Roman Catholic Church, Eatontown. He is survived by his wife, Philomena Auricchio Battista of Long Branch; a son and daughter-in-law, Frank G. and Rosalie Battista of Long Branch; a daughter, Theresa J. Battista of Oceanport; two brothers, Anthony Battista of the Bronx, and Frank Battista of New York City; a sister, Nina Serpati of Bardonia, N.Y.; one grandson; and several nieces and nephews.
