The state wants to make Route 130 safer.
To do that, the state Department of Transportation is planning to add a right-turn lane on southbound Route 130 at the intersection of Old Trenton Road and reduce the size of a center island on Route 130 at the South River Road intersection.
The smaller island will allow trucks to make turns onto Route 130 from South River Road more easily, according to Township Engineer Cathleen Marcelli.
The two projects in Cranbury are part of a wider effort to ease traffic around N.J. Turnpike Exit 8A and will affect approaches to the roadway in South Brunswick as well.
Ms. Marcelli said the cost of both projects will be covered by the state and should be completed this summer.
The DOT’s Congestion Busters Task Force is proposing the changes.
The township also has been working with the task force on an extension project of Liberty Way from Prologis Park to Cranbury Brook.
The township is seeking a DOT grant and a federal highway grant for a total of $1.4 million to build the extension and to help cover the cost of a bridge that will extend the road to Route 130 and South River Road.
