Judkins and Scarlatella

Ruth Smith Judkins
   Ruth Smith Judkins, 82, of Richland, Pa., formerly of Hopewell Township, died in the Phoebe Richland Health Care Center on July 5.
   Born in Syracuse, N.Y., she was a resident of Hopewell Township for 40 years before moving to Richland in 2001.
   A graduate of Hamilton High School, Class of 1941, and Trenton State College, Class of 1962, she taught school for 26 years, 21 of them in the Titusville and Bear Tavern schools in the Hopewell Valley Regional School District. Following her retirement, she was active in Literacy Volunteers of Ocean County as a tutor and trainer of tutors, having received the "Tutor of the Year Award" in 1995.
   She was a member of the National Education Association, the New Jersey Education Association and the Ocean County Retired Educators Association and Daughters of "98."
   Daughter of the late Archie T. and Mae W. Smith and sister of the late Frederick W. Smith, she is survived by a son, Michael L. Judkins of Upper Black Eddy, Pa.; seven nieces and nephews; 19 grand nieces and nephews and three great-grand nieces and nephews.
   A memorial service will be held on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Blackwell Memorial Home, 21 N. Main St., Pennington, with the Rev. Susan Fall, associate pastor of the Pennington Presbyterian Church, officiating.
   Interment will be private.
   Memorial contributions may be made to a local Literacy Volunteers Group.
Venerina Scarlatella
   Venerina (Capicchioni) Scarlatella, 71, of Orange, Mass., formerly of Hopewell, died Saturday at her daughter’s home, where she had lived since 1999.
   Born in the Republic of San Marino, Italy, she was a daughter of the late Marino and Caterina (Albani) Capicchioni. She married Giuseppe Scarlatella in 1959. He died in 1978.
   She moved to the United States in 1961, settling in Queens, N.Y., before moving on to Pennsylvania. In 1967, she moved to New Jersey where she lived until 1998, and then moved to Orange, Mass., to live with her daughter, Maria Paoletti and family.
   She had been a member of St. Alphonsus Church in Hopewell, and became a member of St. Mary’s Church in Orange, Mass. She also had been a member of the Fratellanza Sammarinese of New York.
   Predeceased by a brother Giuliano Capicchioni and a granddaughter Emily Scarlatella, she is survived by: sons, Salvatore Scarlatella, and his companion Kim Hicks, of Pennington, and Ricardo Scarlatella of Lawrenceville; daughters Maria Paoletti and her husband Anthony of Orange, Mass., and Caterina Scarlatella-Schiltz and her husband Kevin, of Minneapolis, Minn.; grandchildren, Daniel Scarlatella, Vincent Scarlatella, Jennifer Kiermaz, Joseph Paoletti, Julia Paoletti, and Jennifer Schiltz; sisters Domenica Minguzzi and Marisa Brigliadori, both of Italy; and several nephews and nieces.
   Services in Orange, Mass., will be held Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at Witty’s Funeral Home, 158 S. Main St., with the Rev. Fr. William Lunney of St. Mary’s Church officiating.
   Calling hours will be held Tuesday from 5:30-7:30 p.m. prior to the prayer service at the funeral home.
   Services in New Jersey will be Friday from the Cromwell-Immordino Memorial Home, 71 E. Prospect St., Hopewell, from 8:30-9:30 a.m. with a Mass following at 10 a.m. in St. Alphonsus Church, 54 E. Prospect St., Hopewell.
   Interment will follow in Highland Cemetery, Hopewell.
   Calling hours will be held Thursday from 7-9 p.m. at the Cromwell-Immordino Memorial Home.
