Alexander E. "Sandy" Schaafsma Sr., 68, of Lake City, Fla., died Aug. 11 at his farm.
A longtime resident of Pennington, he moved to Lake City a few years ago.
He owned and operated Hadafarm Dairy near Pennington, sold fertilizer for Ed Platz with Plant Food Chemical Co., the Lebanon Chemical Company and most recently for Crop Production Services. He retired in 2003.
While in high school Mr. Schaafsma was the president of the Future Farmers of America. He was a past member of the Board of Directors for the Fertilizer Solutions Association, member of Hopeful Baptist Church in Lake City and enjoyed fishing and hunting.
Preceded in death by a son Alexander "Eddie" Schaafsma Jr. in 1982, he is survived by his wife of 46 years, Janet Schaafsma of Lake City; a son and daughter-in-law Charles Keith and Laurel Schaafsma of Lake City; a daughter Debra Townsend of Titusville; a sister Jackie Peer of Fredericksburg, Md.; three grandchildren Charles C. "Karl" Townsend IV of Santa Fe, N.M., Samantha Townsend of Titusville and Alec Schaafsma of Lake City; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Aug. 14 at Hopeful Baptist Church.
Interment was in Hopeful Baptist Cemetery.
A memorial service for Mr. Schaasfma will be held in Pennington at a later date.
