For the week of Aug. 29 through Sept. 2.
Junior Girl Scout Troop 1844 completed their Bronze Award by filling 56 welcome bags for the children of Women Aware, a program that helps victims of domestic violence. These bags contained books, pens, pencils, coloring books, crayons, toothpaste, toothbrushes, combs, T-shirts and a variety of small items that would help the children, who have left their homes due to domestic violence. Since the Scouts were Brownies, they have been making small donations to Women Aware and decided to continue this project for their Bronze Award.
To prepare for the award, the Troop had to complete two badges, "My Community and Model Citizen" and "A Girl Scout Sign: The Sign of the Sun." Each Scout was also required to earn her junior aide award. The Scouts requested donations from their school and various local businesses in the area. At the last meeting of the year, they assembled 56 bags that were brought to Women Aware in late June.
The Troop would like to thank the school community of Brooks Crossing Elementary School, $.99 Power in North Brunswick, Alphagraphics, Stop & Shop, the co-workers of Manal Barakat, the co-workers of Donna Brower and the Scouts’ families and friends for their support and donations. With their help, the Troop was able to bring a smile to the faces of many children.
Girl Scout cookie season is approaching. South Brunswick Girl Scout Troops will be selling cookies on Sunday, Sept. 11 at Community Unity Day at Woodlot Park on New Road, Kendall Park. The Scouts will have a table at this event where they will be also handing out registration forms for anyone interested in becoming a Girl Scout as well as selling Girl Scout calendars. Cookies will be on sale from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. These cookie and calendar sales help the Service Unit supplement some of the costs for events such as these so that they can continue to attend and participate.
