Regional land trust Delaware and Raritan Greenway is holding a contest to name the active recreation portion of Princeton Township’s newest park, located on The Great Road.
Twenty-two acres on the western side of The Great Road will be opened to the public on Oct. 8.
This land originally was part of Coventry Farm, 165 acres of historic Princeton open space preserved in 2001 by D&R Greenway Land in partnership with Princeton Township, Mercer County, the state Green Acres Program, Friends of Princeton Open Space, and more than 135 families and individuals.
Of the 165 acres that were preserved, 50 were deeded to the township as parkland. Of those, 28 acres of woodland, located to the east of The Great Road just north of Mountain Lakes Preserve, are designated for passive recreation, and 22 acres were developed into an active-recreation park.
The new park includes playing fields, picnic sites, a playground, and pathways that connect across the lower field of the preserved farm to Mountain Lakes Preserve.
Participants may submit as many names as they wish. The individual who submits the winning entry will receive two tickets to a special D&R Greenway event to be held on May 21, 2006. "A Stony Brook Stroll" will feature a guided walk lead by Greenway’s Naturalist and Director of Land Preservation Bill Rawlyk and will conclude with a lobster bake at the Johnson Education Center, D&R Greenway’s new home in Greenway Meadows Park off Rosedale Road.
Send ideas for the name of the active recreation portion of the park along with name, age (if under 18), address, e-mail address, and phone number to: Princeton Recreation Department, c/o Name for Princeton’s Newest Park, 380 Witherspoon St., Princeton, NJ 08540. The deadline for entries is Sept. 23.
