Registration is under way for the winter-spring 2006 semester at the Princeton Adult School.
Offerings this year include more than 130 courses ranging from outdoor survival and classical music to "Science Times: News from the Frontiers of Scientific Inquiry," a series of lectures.
Students can register online, by mail or sign up for classes at in-person registration on Tuesday, Jan. 10, at Princeton High School.
Among the highlights this semester are roster of distinguished speakers for the "Science Times" lecture series. Among them: Princeton University President Shirley Tilghman, a molecular biologist; physicist Lyman Page; environmental biologist Stephen Pacela; and science writer Richard Preston.
There are also several new courses, including a course on the history of American musical theater and another taking a new look at modern art.
In addition, literature courses will span centuries starting with "Dante’s Purgatory," and coming up to the present with "Contemporary Latin American Fiction."
There are also five cooking classes, including "A Cook’s Guide to the Refrigerator,’ and Japanese cooking.
In addition, the spring program also includes introduction to computing, digital photography, Hatha-yoga, ballroom dancing and fly fishing.
"Every year, we aim for the proverbial something for everybody," said Princeton Adult School President Nancy Beck. "I think we’re closer than ever. We have more than a dozen new courses ranging from cerebral to recreational. … We have some new ‘fun’ courses poker, gardening, outdoor survival skills."
She continued, "We are also repeating our very popular complete-in-one-semester language courses, ‘Italian for Travelers’ and ‘Spanish for Travelers’ and a class, taught in English, featuring Italian films. In addition, we continue to offer our very popular foreign language program, which includes all the usual ones plus Chinese and Arabic. We’ve also expanded English for Speakers of Other Languages and have five advanced courses including one on American culture."
Because of the high school construction, students coming for in-person registration should use the front entrance to the high school. In addition to on-street parking, parking is available at the University Medical Center at Princeton’s Franklin Avenue lot one block from the school and the new lot at the corner of Franklin Avenue and Walnut Lane, just behind the high school.
