Cotsen Children’s Library to celebrate Hans Christian Andersen

Cotsen Children’s Library, located in the Firestone Library at Princeton University, continues its celebration of Hans Christian Andersen’s birth with special performances and programs throughout January.
   • Saturday from 11 a.m. to noon:
Hans Christian Andersen with Julie Della Torre: A Storytelling. Families with children over age 5, free, but registration is required.
Julie Della Torre has been telling Andersen stories for more than 20 years. It was at the Hans Christian Andersen sculpture in Central Park, where stories are told once a week by storytellers from all over the world, that Ms. Torre learned to love Andersen.
• Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m.:
"FABRICations": An Illustration Workshop with Muriel Green. Ages 9–11, free, but registration and attendance at the morning storytelling is required.
Artist, teacher and seamstress Muriel Green will lead participants in trying out a new medium to illustrate the Andersen stories they heard from Julie Della Torre. Participants in workshop will stay after the storytelling for lunch — which will be Cotsen’s treat — and then will work with Ms. Green to design and construct individual fabric pictures that capture special moments in Andersen’s stories.
   • Sunday from 4:30 to 6 p.m.:
Storytelling Arts presents "The Snow Queen," hosted by the Cotsen Critix. Ages 10 and up, free, registration required.
The Cotsen Critix will host a magical performance of one of Andersen’s most haunting and beautiful stories, "The Snow Queen." Five master storytellers from Storytelling Arts, Inc., have joined together to create this hour-long telling. This is a story for the brave at heart —- those who have reached the age of 10 are invited to be part of this unique retelling. Because it is a snowbound tale to be told on a cold winter’s eve, warm drinks and light sweets will be provided.
   • Saturday, Jan. 29, from 1 to 3 p.m.
Andersen as Scrapbook Artist: Making "Picture Books" for Friends. Ages 7-9, registration required.
Scrapbook creator Vikki Obst will leads a scrapbooking workshop inspired by Andersen. Participants will look at some examples of Andersen’s delightful work, hear about the newly revived art of scrapbooking now all the craze in 2006, and design pages in special fold-out scrapbooks handcrafted by Ms. Obst. Participants should bring several photos or poems or other paper memorabilia to use in creation of scrapbook pages. Other materials will be provided.
To register, call the Cotsen Children’s Library at (609) 258-2697.
