HIGHTSTOWN Christopher B. Flores was sworn in Tuesday night as the newest member of Hightstown’s Police Department, as Borough Council honored a retired member of the force, Lt. Brian Rossi.
The 26-year-old native of Toms River stood beside his mother, Barbara Flores, as Mayor Bob Patten administered the oath of office at Monday night’s Borough Council meeting.
"I can’t wait to get to work. This is a lifetime dream of mine," Mr. Rossi said before taking the oath.
His first day on the job was Wednesday.
"Chris Flores is an enthusiastic young man who’s going to make his career with our Police Department," said Chief James Eufemia, thanking council for approving the funding for the position.
Earlier in the meeting, Chief Eufemia read a proclamation from the borough honoring Lt. Rossi for 18 years of distinguished service.
In addition to the many letters of thanks Lt. Rossi received over his tenure with the department, he was recognized on several occasions for professional excellence.
Lt. Rossi was named Patrolman of the Year in 1991, received a commendation in 1988 for his work on a commercial burglary and again in 1994 for his work in a homicide investigation that resulted in the conviction of all parties involved.
Over the course of his career, he served in the rank of patrolman, detective, sergeant and lieutenant.
He retired in December.
Before working in Hightstown, Lt. Rossi served on the Allentown Police Department for eight years, where he achieved the rank of sergeant. Altogether, he served for 26 years as a police officer.
He was unable to attend Tuesday’s meeting because he has moved to Virginia.
