On Friday night, March 3, members of the Jewish community will gather at the Jewish Center of Princeton in a special display of Jewish commitment and celebration.
Conceived by the National Jewish Outreach Program (NJOP), "Shabbat Across America/Canada" is an effort by the entire Jewish community to renew interest in the fourth of the Ten Commandments the observance of a weekly day of rest ("Shabbat" in Hebrew).
The Jewish Center will be one of approximately 700 synagogues across North America that will be simultaneously opening its doors to practicing and non-practicing Jews alike, so that they may join together to experience and rejoice in a traditional Shabbat service and festive meal.
Led by Rabbi Adam Feldman and Cantor Murray Simon, attendees will experience a lively and interactive Friday night service and a traditional Shabbat dinner. The event will take place from 7 to 9:30 p.m.
" ‘Shabbat Across America’ is an exciting and modern way of reintroducing friends and family members to a practice that has been with, and unified, our people for over 3,300 years, and which we hope will be with us for at least 3,300 more," said Rabbi Ephraim Buchwald, NJOP founder and director.
Designed to teach a generation of young Jewish people about the beauty and significance of the Jewish Sabbath, "Shabbat Across America" is the first continent-wide program which appeals to members of all major Jewish denominations.
Located at 435 Nassau St. in Princeton, the Jewish Center has more than 700 members and draws from a range of communities. Synagogue co-chairs are Debbie Brett and Tirza Wahrman.
