A black man in a hooded sweatshirt made off with undisclosed amount of cash after handing a teller at the Sun National Bank on Route 27 a note demanding cash on Monday afternoon, South Brunswick Police Detective James Ryan said Monday.
The man — described as 5 feet, 7 inches tall, thin to medium build and wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt, baseball cap and blue jeans — waited on line at the bank and handed the note to a teller at about 2:45 p.m., Detective Ryan said.
The note demanded cash and said the robber had a gun, Detective Ryan said. The man did not show a gun during the robbery, he said.
After several minutes, he was given cash and left the bank, running north on Route 27, Detective Ryan said. Police are trying to confirm if the man got into a car on the side of the Exxon station at the intersection of New Road and Route 27, Detective
Ryan said. The gas station is just north of the bank on Route 27.
The bank’s video surveillance was able to capture several images of the suspect, Detective Ryan said.
There were five employees and a customer in the bank at the time of the robbery, he said.
Township police and the agents from the FBI’s Franklin office are working together on the case, Detective Ryan said. He said police and the FBI believe the robbery is connected to recent robberies in northern Middlesex County, but would not say where or when.
