Patrick F. McManimon Sr.
Retired steamfitter
GLEN GARDNER Patrick F. McManimon Sr. died Tuesday at Hunterdon Medical Center, Flemington. He was 82.
Born in Trenton, he lived in Princeton for 80 years and for the last two years in Glen Gardner.
He retired in 1988 as a steamfitter for Plumbers & Pipe Fitters Local 9 of Princeton, and more recently of Trenton, for over 43 years. He also was treasurer of Local 360 and later Local 9.
He was a member and past chief of Engine Company No. 1 of the Princeton Fire Department. He also was an assistant Little League baseball coach in Princeton.
He was an Army veteran of World War II.
Husband of the late Barbara McManimon and father of the late Kevin S. McManimon, he is survived by daughter and son-in-law Shevawn and Gerry Graesser of Glen Gardner; son Patrick McManimon of New Jersey; daughter-in-law Jennifer Sass-McManimon of Plainsboro; and grandson Sean P. Graesser.
The funeral will be 8 a.m. Saturday at Mather-Hodge Funeral Home, 40 Vandeventer Ave., Princeton.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 9 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul’s Roman Catholic Church, 214 Nassau St., Princeton.
Burial will be in St. Paul’s Cemetery.
Calling hours will be 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Behrends Messer Jr.
Retired Mobil Oil executive
Behrends "Pete" Messer Jr. of Princeton died Monday at home following a brief illness. He was 84.
In a career at Mobil Oil that spanned 35 years, Mr. Messer retired from Mobil Oil Research and Development Corp. in 1983 as manager of wholesale plant and civil engineering, a position he held for 15 years. In that capacity, he directed Mobil Oil’s worldwide engineering projects, which involved distribution terminals, lube blending, wax and grease manufacturing facilities, civil, marine, and architectural engineering.
In his earlier years with Mobil Oil, which began in 1948, he managed a number of major construction projects in North America, Europe, the Middle East and Far East, and managed petroleum distribution terminals in the New York area.
He received a certificate of appreciation from the American Petroleum Institute after serving as a member and subsequently chairman of the Committee on Petroleum Measurement. His efforts were instrumental in achieving increased effectiveness for the committee’s role in standardization and regulatory activities involving the accountability of crude oil and its products.
Born in Yonkers, N.Y., he grew up in Edgemont, N.Y., where he was active in scouting, attaining Eagle Scout status. He graduated from Bronxville High School and from Worcester Polytechnic Institute in 1943 with a degree in civil engineering. At Worcester, he was elected vice president of his class and president of Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity.
During World War II, he attended the Army Engineer Officers Candidate School at Ft. Belvoir, Va., and was assigned to the Advanced Engineer Troop Training Program at Ft. Lewis, Wash. He then served in southeastern China as a special intelligence officer with the Office of Strategic Services. After the war, he advanced to the rank of lieutenant colonel in the Army Corps of Engineers.
Mr. Messer was a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, International Standards Organization, and the Old Guard of Princeton. He was a licensed professional engineer in New York and New Jersey.
Stepfather of the late Maire Paisley, he is survived by his wife, Jeanne Buckhorn Messer; daughters Barbara Palomino of Clearwater, Fla., and Nancy Messer of Greenport, N.Y.; sons John Messer of Port Richey, Fla., and Bill Messer of Richmond, Va.; grandchildren John Messer, Mandy Chu, Lindsay Messer, Amber Messer, McKenzie Messer and Joseph Messer; stepsons John and Mike Paisley; and stepdaughter Sally Vargas.
A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Princeton University Chapel.
Interment at Mt Hope Cemetery, Hastings-On-Hudson, N.Y., will be at a later date.

Giovanni G. Balestrieri
Former Princeton resident
LAWRENCE Giovanni Giuseppe "John" Balestrieri died Monday after a lifetime of disabilities. He was 67.
Born in Barano D’Ischia, Italy, he came to Princeton in 1952, where he lived for many years. In later years, he lived in various homes throughout New Jersey and spent the last part of his life at Lawrenceville Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, leaving many friends there.
He held many odd jobs, his favorite was caddying at Springdale Golf Club in Princeton.
A music lover, he enjoyed gathering with family members to play the harmonica and sing songs. He enjoyed listening and singing Italian music, polkas, country and western, and spiritual music. He also enjoyed learning foreign languages.
Son of the late Luigi and Cataldina Balestrieri, brother of the late Dominick Balestrieri of Hamilton and Maria Libralato of Venice, Italy, he is survived by brothers and sister-in-law Ralph Balestrieri of Lawrence and Salvatore and Maria Balestrieri of West Windsor; sisters and brothers-in-law Marianna and Sebastiano L. Balestriere of Princeton, Carmela and Antonio Mangone of West Windsor and Filomena and Richard Mazzella of Hopewell; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Melda E. Rogers
Former Montgomery resident
TRURO, Mass. Melda Ellen Rogers died Wednesday at Cape Cod Hospital following a recent stroke. She was 88.
Born in Stillwater in Sussex County, she moved to Truro in 1976, having formerly lived in the Blawenburg area of Montgomery Township.
She was educated in Stillwater and Newton schools and received her registered nurse degree from Overlook Hospital in Summit.
She devoted her life to her husband, family and friends.
Daughter of the late Vernest A. and Maude Hineline Lewis, sister of the late Hazel Gibson and grandmother of the late David May, she is survived by her husband, Walter I. Rogers, whom she married in 1939; children Lynn R. Eisenbeil of Hendersonville, N.C., and L. Carey Rogers of Portland, Ore.; and grandchildren Arrana Ashton of Hendersonville, N.C., and Tori A. Rogers of Portland, Ore.
A memorial service will be private.

Alden W. Bynum Sr.
New Orleans native
PLAINSBORO Alden Warren Bynum Sr. died Saturday at the University Medical Center at Princeton. He was 85.
He worked in the grocery and market business as well as in real estate.
A native of New Orleans, he and his wife settled in Plainsboro after Hurricane Katrina struck the New Orleans area last year to be near their son and daughter-in-law.
He was educated in New Orleans schools and attended Xavier University.
Son of the late Amanda Medlock and Henry Bynum, he is survived by his wife of 62 years, Lucinda Lester Bynum; sons and daughter-in-law Alden Warren Jr. and Dr. Lester M. and Juanita Bynum of Plainsboro; grandchildren Alden III, Lesley Michelle, Reginald Eugene, Marcellus, Montague and Messina Bynum; brothers Horace C. Bynum Sr. and Alvin S. Bynum; sisters-in-law Ethel Bynum, Laura Bynum and Adelle Bynum; and many nephews, nieces and cousins.
The funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Williams United Methodist Church, 7510 Pearl St., New Orleans.
Viewing will begin at 10 a.m.
