Letters to the editor

In a time of political instability, government corruption, and lack of public faith in political leadership, state Sen. Peter Inverso has stood firm for integrity and accountability in government. He will be missed.
As for our next Senator, there shines a ray of hope known as Assemblyman Bill Baroni. Mr. Baroni sets a new standard for the men and women we choose to vote to represent us in our public offices and renews our confidence in our legislators.
Sen. Inverso has given his full endorsement of Mr. Baroni, and I would suggest we listen. We should stand together with Bill Baroni to be Peter Inverso’s successor as our state Senator.
Without leadership from reformers like Mr. Baroni and Sen. Inverso in the Legislature, we will most likely, as a community, face the continued mishandling of our money that we entrust our governing body to use in our best interests.
Regardless of party politics, one should simply look at Bill Baroni’s tireless work going door to door to listen to families through out South Brunswick.
The key is Mr. Baroni listens to us like Sen. Inverso. I trust that if he is elected to the state senate, he will lead much like Inverso did.

Annual dinner

a huge success

To the editor:

The South Brunswick Family YMCA held the seventh Annual Gala & Casino Night on April 27 at Pierre’s Restaurant, which was a huge success.

The Y recognized Councilman (and former YMCA Board member) Chris Killmurray for his support of the YMCA over the past 10 years and his dedication to our mission.

It was certainly a pleasure to gamble and win at a casino and even better that the proceeds will be used to provide financial aid scholarships as well as support the ongoing programs at the Y.

I want to thank everyone involved in the event including Y members, local businesses and organizations and the community as well as the leadership provided by Anthony Campisano, board president, and the support of the Board of Directors. As usual, Pierre did a great job hosting the event and support the YMCA. Many thanks to Pierre and his excellent staff!

Mary Powers deserves credit for her tireless efforts to ensure a fun evening. Over the past three months she has handled everything from booking the location and DJ, sending invitations, overseeing the program book, soliciting donations from local businesses and preparing over 200 goodie bags. A special thanks to Mary Powers.

The Gala & Casino Night is an annual spring event. Don’t miss out on the fun next April. Be on the lookout for the Annual Golf Outing to be held Tuesday, Oct. 6, at the Forsgate Country Club.

Pray for legacy

of Najeeb Lewis

To the editor:

I carry a heavy heart in announcing the passing of one of our own, a proud 12-year-old Viking, no. 75, who also excelled on the Travel A basketball team with Coach Keenan and Coach Taylor. A sweet spirited, young man, who attended both Monmouth Junction Elementary and Crossroads South Middle schools with our children. Until November 2006, he resided at South Ridge Woods Apartments. He was Najeeb Lewis.

Najeeb was struck and killed by a hit and run driver. The driver was apprehended shortly after he left Najeeb lying there, dined and had additional drinks at a local tavern.

I ask that you, as parents, take a moment and reflect on last year’s 2006 football and basketball season. Najeeb worked hard alongside his teammates, his brothers, and his friends to win the games. Yet, Najeeb was called by god on May 3 to enter into a brand new season: an eternal life.

I ask that we as loving parents come together and support the Durell family during this extremely difficult time. Let them feel the love that permeates throughout our town. Let them know that the South Brunswick Vikings are also mourning and we will unite with them and begin to slowly heal. We have all been affected by this tragedy.

Let’s keep Najeeb’s legacy alive. Let’s keep praying and ask god to wrap his arms around this family and when the services are all over, that god continue to comfort and sustain them. I also ask god to protect all of our children from all hurt, harm and danger. The enemy is after our boys and girls, and it is imperative that we take a stand and pray that god protects them in our absence.

The Durrell family is accepting all cards and donations at the following address: 32 Dunham Loop, Berlin, N.J. 08009.

Paying fine

is not enough

To the editor:

Gov. Jon Corzine could do more.

He has said he was sorry. He admitted he was wrong for not wearing his seat belt. He called it a "bad habit." He paid a $46 fine and paid a greater price physically; and yet there is more New Jersey’s governor could – and should do.

He joked about being a public service announcement. Doing real PSAs would be far more appropriate.

And what of using his immunity to allow his drivers to break speed limits and drive at speeds that could endanger or kill innocent citizens? If someone had died in his crash, would he also just be sorry and pay a fine?
