Township fire under investigation

EAST WINDSOR — Firefighters responded to a two-alarm blaze on Monmouth Street early Sunday morning.
Chief Barry Rashkin of East Windsor Volunteer Fire Co. No. 2 said the department received the call at about 1 a.m. Two people were asleep inside the house, but they were able to escape the fire uninjured after being awakened by a neighbor, he said.
The fire took about one hour to put out and caused heavy damage to the house’s garage and kitchen, which Mr. Rashkin called a "total loss." However, the residents will be able to eventually reoccupy the house, he said.
Company No. 2 received assistance from Township Company No. 1, Hightstown firefighters, Applegarth Company No. 57 from Monroe and Fire Station No. 48 from Cranbury to fight the fire. Fire departments from Millstone, Plainsboro and Princeton Junction covered the East Windsor area while the main department’s resources were dedicated to Monmouth Street.
The cause of the fire remained under investigation.
