The Hillsborough High gymnasts put on an extraordinary show for their home fans and captured the school’s second sectional team title at Saturday’s Central 2 Championships.
Hillsborough accumulated a meet and state record score of 114.375 to defeat rival Hunterdon Central by over one point for the championship. As usual, the Raiders received contributions from everyone on their deep and balanced roster.
“I’m so excited,” a jubilant HHS head coach Beth Murrin said during the post-meet celebration. “The first few girls in each event produced scores so everyone could relax. We have a lot of girls who can score 9s and we could only use three during the season. A meet like this was perfect for us.”
HHS junior Chrissy Weber captured the uneven bars title with an impressive 9.70 and tied for first place in the all-around (38.175). Weber placed in the top eight in all four events.
The Raiders scored between 28.350 (floor) and 28.950 (bars) on all for events as a team. Fifteen different gymnasts finished in the top 10 in their events. Five Raiders scored at least 9.55 on the balance beam, where Christina Rhoades placed second (9.75). Hillsborough also received big all-around contributions from freshman Brittany Marcsisin (5th, 37.950), Rhoades (tie for 8th, 37.200) and senior Mary-Kate Lynch (10th, 37.175).
Hillsborough returns to the NJSIAA Championships, set to be held at the Hunterdon Central Fieldhouse next Saturday, in pursuit of its first state team title.
