PHS grad helping Big Red girls

LAWRENCEVILLE — Kelly Curtis had every intention of being a member of the Lawrenceville School girls’ winter track team this season.
That was until about two weeks before the season started.
”I thought I was going to run track, but the basketball people talked to me about playing,” said Curtis, a Princeton High gradate who is spending a post-graduate year at Lawrenceville. “It was one last year in high school, so I thought I would play basketball.
”I’m trying to get recruited for track, so it is probably not helpful for me to play basketball because I won’t get any jumps recorded for the season. But I still practice some with the track team. And I really like playing basketball.”
After winning its opener against Blair, Lawrenceville has lost three straight games. Curtis has been a steady contributor as a starting guard, averaging 15.3 points a game, including a season-high 22 in the win over Blair.
”My parents were a big influence in me playing basketball,” Curtis said. “I knew they wanted to see me do well in track. But they also wanted to watch me play basketball.”
Curtis still plans to pursue track and field as her sport in college, but for now she’s happy to be getting one last chance to play competitive basketball. She’s finding the competition different than what she faced at PHS. In fact, school in general is very different for the life-long Princeton resident.
”It’s such a different atmosphere from public school,” Curtis said. “It’s been a good experience. Basketball has been fun. The only had thing is I really wanted to play PHS and we don’t play them. That would have been fun.”
