Three students and one Princeton University employee have tested positive for salmonella bacteria with about 60 other students having reported symptoms of gastroenteritis, which include abdominal pain and diarrhea, the university reported Thursday.
Salmonella bacteria is most commonly transmitted through food.
”As of now, cases have not been determined to be localized to any particular eating venue,” said university spokeswoman Emily Aronson said.
She added that doctors began recording patients’ recent eating histories after noticing the unusual number of gastroenteritis cases and that none of the infected individuals work in food services at the university.
Doctors are treating the four cases of salmonella bacteria, according to published reports.
