Laverty, Flippin advance in Princeton’s Greatest contest

Young vs. Derry and Rumer vs. Ryan are next two matchups

Former lacrosse and football star Jim Laverty and former track and field star Royce Flippin have advanced through the first round of the Princeton High’s All-Time Greatest Athlete contest.
Laverty, who helped the PHS lacrosse team reach the state semifinals in 1986, garnered 67 percent of the vote to defeat former lacrosse star Scott Gabrielsen in a first-round matchup. Flippin secured 56 percent of the vote for a narrow victory over former cross country and track star Sandra Tignor.
Two new head-to-head matchups are now underway, as former basketball and football star Darius Young takes on former basketball star Rodney Derry in one matchup. The other will pit former baseball and football star Tim Rumer against ice hockey scoring leader John Ryan.
