EAST WINDSOR — The township is looking for a new tenant to farm two parcels of land.
The plots on Old York and Conover Roads are 60 and 45 acres respectively, and the minimum bid for each is $30 per acre per year, for a three-year period.
At the minimum bid, both parcels of land would generate $3,150 annually for the township. The lease would be awarded to the highest bidder, pending Township Council approval.
The township first purchased the land in 2003 through funds from a state open space grant, said Mayor Janice Mironov said. During the first two three-year leases from 2003 through 2008, local farmer Clifford Conover cultivated soybeans on the land, she added.
”It’s a way to maintain township property, to continue farming, and to bring in a few dollars,” Mayor Mironov said.
She added that each year the township can cancel the lease at anytime if officials decide to use it for a different purpose.
”While we’re not choosing to use the land in any way, it makes sense to have it be used for this purpose (farming),” the mayor said.
All bids must be sent to the municipal clerk by Dec. 9. Bids for the Conover Road parcel must be received by 2:30 p.m. that day, bids for the Old York Road tract by 2:45 p.m.
