MANVILLE: Basta remains undefeated

RECREATION WRESTLING

Manville hosted South Plainfield and Bound Brook in a tough Recreation wrestling tri-meet last Saturday.
In the first match against South Plainfield, Manville could come away with only three victories.
Paul Basta, at 60 pounds, went into the second period of his match at 0-0. He got an escape in the second and rode out his opponent for the 1-0 Manville win.
Bob Demeter, at 67 pounds, dominated his man for a 12-1 major decision. Demeter got the takedown and three-point near-fall for a quick 5-0 lead. After a reversal and two back points, he finished the match out by putting his opponent on his back for a 12-1 final score.
Brian Kuhlman, at 70 pounds, had a takedown in the first to make it 2-0. In the second period, he was able to get two more back points. After an escape in the third, Kuhlman got the takedown to finish this one up at 6-1.
Manville beat Bound Brook on the mat but because the team is giving away three matches via forfeits, the team score was too much too overcome.
Gavin Kassick started off with a takedown to go into the second period up 2-0 in his 53-pound bout. There he was able to get a reversal and then another takedown to take a 6-1 lead into the third. Kassick then got another takedown to close this out at 8-2.
Shane Demeter, at 57 pounds, had his man in trouble throughout the match. Taking a 4-0 lead into the second, Demeter put his man on his back twice for six back points. He added six more points in the third period for a tech fall and five team points.
Basta (60) made quick work in pinning his opponent at 27 seconds of the first period to remain unbeaten on the season.
Bob Demeter (67), not to be outdone, ended his match in 28 seconds with another quick first period pin.
Kuhlman matched Demeter with a 38-second pin of his own. Jake Tokarzewski finished the Manville scoring with a 34-second pin of his own.
In some of the other matches, RJ Thompson took his man down and pinned at 47 seconds in the first period. Joe Kronmaier nearly duplicated that with a 45-second pin of his own. GianCarlo, after tying the match up at 5-5, went into OT and scored a takedown for his win. Michael Tyle got a first period pin of his own and also had a hard fought 8-7 win. GianCarlo also had a second win with a 14-3 decision over his opponent.
Manville will be hosting Watchung Hills and Hillsborough on Saturday Feb. 21 in the final matches of the season. These last two regular season matches will be real helpful going into the tournament seeding meetings.
