MONROE — Leon Redbone, folk legend and jingle master, is making his way to Monroe Township’s Richard P. Marasco Center on June 27, compliments of the Cultural Arts Commission.
”He’s very dynamic,” said Nancie Gunkelman, a member of the arts commission. “He brings a lot from the great American songbook, but he puts a new spin on them.”
Although Mr. Redbone has been somewhat of a man of mystery since he first broke out into the music scene during the 1970s, one thing has been noted by friends, musicians and fans alike: He’s one of the greats, a gifted vocalist and guitarist.
”He’s been around for quite a few years,” Ms. Gunkelman said. “He does have a cult following.”
A cross between a vaudeville performer and a southern blues man, Ms. Gunkelman said she’s sure Mr. Redbone will give the audience a show they will not soon forget.
”You won’t see (these acts) in a lot of places,” she said. “They are class acts at a much more affordable price.”
Tickets are sold at the senior and recreation centers, but also will be available at the door the night of the performance.
The show will begin at 8 p.m. at the Marasco Center, 1629 Perrineville Road, in the Monroe Township High School, and admission ranges from $20 for commission members, $18 for patrons and free for students.
