A milestone was set at South Hunterdon Regional High School on Sept. 15 when the sub-varsity boys soccer team played its inaugural game.
The opponent was the Morris County School of Technology, which fought South through a scoreless first half.
However, in the second half, both teams threw caution to the wind with Morris being the first to break through on a rebound of a penalty kick at 45 feet.
South evened the score when Zach Mastrich booted in a rebound of his own penalty shot at 60 feet.
South eventually secured the victory when senior Captain Jay Hertz scored on an assist by Patrick Ferry three minutes into the second overtime.
Freshman Jonathan Wendeborn was crisp in goal, making 10 saves as the South goalkeeper.
The sub-varsity team, which allows girls to play with the boys, was sparked by relentless play throughout the contest by Danielle Lelie and Katelyn Little along with Andrew Nini, Josh Weinstein and Alberto Ramirez among others.
”I couldn’t be more proud of the kids, they all played as a team with the ‘never give up – first to the ball attitude’ we’ve talked about in practice,” said Coach Stefan Szygiel.
The members of the SHRHS high school team are Holly Kapsimalis, Katelyn Little, Roxanne Kreider, Lloyd Seiter, Zach Mastrich, Patrick Ferry, Jay Hertz, Paul Cally, Andrew Nini, Josh Weinstein, Danielle Lelie, Alberto Ramirez, Kasey MacChesney, Kyle Tillett, Andy Sciarrotta, Sean Piscetelli, AJ Tan, Jordan Beale, Owen Spath and Jonathan Wendeborn.
