The Princeton High football team is 4-0. But don’t expect the Little Tigers to rest on their laurels or get too far ahead of themselves.
”Trenton played the hearts out,” said Princeton coach Steve Everette, whose overcame a 14-0 halftime deficit to beat Trenton, 17-14, on Saturday. “To say we made mistakes would be taking away the fact that Trenton played very hard and forced us to play badly for a half. Once again we are very lucky to have a bunch of veteran players who were able to overcome a sluggish start.”
The Little Tigers turned the ball over three times and dug themselves a hole in the first half. But in the second half they got close with a safety and a Mike Olentine to Doug Bryant touchdown pass to make it 14-9. Then in the fourth quarter, Josh Gordon scored on a 52-yard run to give Princeton the lead. Trevor Barsamian’s two-point conversion run made it 17-14.
”Our defense and special teams were able to give us a spark in the second half,” said Everette, whose team plays at Steinert on Saturday. “Trevor and Josh were able to find holes and start to wear down the defense of Trenton. Doug was able to make a big catch and Nick Miranda kept the chains moving with big catches.
”Josh is showing he could be possibly the best player in the CVC, but I am sure he would be the first to admit that his O-Line and Trevor are doing a great job giving him opportunities to get down field.”
Gordon finished with 116 yards rushing to pace the offense.
West Windsor-Plainsboro North improved to 3-1 with a 26-14 win over Ewing. Sean Reed rushed for two touchdowns and Len Bellezza ran for another in the win for the Knights.
WW-P South fell to 2-2 with a 17-10 loss to Hamilton. The Pirates trailed, 10-0, at halftime before rallying to tie the game in the fourth quarter on a Chris Jones touchdown run and a Max Wiemer field goal. But Hamilton came right back with a touchdown to win the game.
”I thought we played with great intensity,” WW-P South coach Todd Smith said. “We just made some mistakes. But I thought the kids came out and played well. We’ve got a lot of young players and even some of our older players are inexperienced. So we’re still learning. Our defense has done a nice job of keeping us in games.”
Jones finished with 62 yards rushing to lead the offense.
The Hun School fell to 1-2 with a 21-14 loss to Penn Charter.
Princeton Day fell to 2-2 with a 28-12 loss to George School. Joshua Meekins ran for 55 yards, while Dylan Kelly ran for a touchdown. Dan Reynolds also connected with Davon Reed for a touchdown pass.
