CENTRAL JERSEY: 9/11 food drives

As the National Day of Service approaches on Sept. 11, volunteers from Yes We CAN! Food Drives is gearing up for a busy day of performing good deeds, along with thousands of other Americans who will observe the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks by engaging in community service activities.
Yes We CAN! Food Drives will set up three food collection sites on Sept. 11, where shoppers will be asked to buy extra produce or canned food to help the Crisis Ministry, a non-denominational organization, replenish its food pantries in Trenton and Princeton. Food collections will take place at Princeton McCaffrey’s from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.; West Windsor Farmers’ Market, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and Pennington Quality Market, from 11 to 3:30.
No strangers to community service, volunteers from Yes We CAN! Food Drives have been standing outside area supermarkets asking for food donations since December 2008. To date, the group has collected more than 80,000 pounds of food to help the Crisis Ministry provide free food each month for its 3,000 clients, 1,000 of whom are children.
Among the volunteers staffing the food drive sites on Sept. 11 will be students from Trenton Central High School’s ScienceMentors 1 to 1, a volunteer science program that matches a mentor and a high school student for the purpose of developing competency and self-esteem through science projects.
