On Friday, students in kindergarten through fourth grades at Woodfern Elementary School will participate in the Sept. 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance by creating cheerful cards for local community organizations, including the VA Medical Center, nursing homes, and other local organizations.
Fourth-grade teacher Ralph Losanno Jr. is heading the project, after having decided that, "although the children at the elementary school are all too young to remember or understand the events of Sept. 11, 2001, that they are certainly not too young to help to give back and strengthen the local community."
Students in each grade level will create cheerful and uplifting cards for a specific community organization, one organization per grade level. Principal Anthony Caparoso said that the 9/11 Day of Service and Remembrance service project is "a great way to honor our country and fallen countrymen."
"By creating these cards for the ninth anniversary of Sept. 11th the Woodfern Elementary students are able to perform service for their local community, and in doing so, they are able to honor the victims and families of September 11th in a constructive and positive way," Mr. Losanno added.
Although this is the first year the school is performing a community service project honoring Sept. 11th, Woodfern Elementary has a long history of community service including honoring soldiers and their families in a yearly Veteran’s Day assembly, as well as participating in Earth Day events, food and clothing drives, and last year, raising more than $800 for the American Red Cross to help rebuilding in Haiti.
