Congratulations St. Paul Baptist Church on 100 years serving the community of Florence. They will be celebrating with a banquet at Kove Catering in Edgewater Park on Saturday, Sept. 18, and a service in their church in Florence on Sunday, 11 a.m. The church was started with eight members who met in the old library, Front and Iron streets for worship services. Reportedly, during the 1909-1910 period there were only seven black families located in Florence. There are memorial benches from St. Paul that have been dedicated in memory of H. Kenneth Wilkie at the H. Kenneth Wilkie Memorial Park on Front Street in Florence. Also the dining hall of the church has been remodeled in memory of the late deacon, William Richardson. In 1976 they received one-half acre of donated land from Griffin Pipe thanks to Mayor H, Kenneth Wilkie, William Obert and Pastor Wiley M. Sharpe. They received an endowment from the late Brother Wilbur and Sister Minnie Henry in the form of a scholarship to be given to young St. Paul members who are going to college. Many thanks to Helena L. Morton, historian, who was kind enough to give me these facts about the church which she loves and takes much pride in. Perhaps next week we will give you some more interesting fact about this wonderful church and its members. ***
