Car flips on Route 35 near mall

EATONTOWN — A 25-year-old Long Branch man was injured when his car struck the concrete barrier in the middle of Route 35 and flipped over at the jughandle for Monmouth Mall at 11:05 p.m. Aug. 15.

Police said Thomas Lehmann Jr. of Avenel Boulevard in Long Branch was driving a 1997 Honda Civic north on Route 35 and approaching a green traffic signal when, for some unknown reason, the car swerved to the left and struck the concrete barrier, separating the northbound and southbound lanes of the highway. They said the car overturned and came to rest on its driver side in the right lane of Route 35 north in front of the Blockbuster Video store.

Lehmann was partially ejected from the car with the lower portion of his body entrapped in the vehicle, according to police. Police said he was extricated by members of the Eatontown First Aid Squad, Eatontown Fire Department and MONOC paramedics.

Lehmann was taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center for treatment of his injuries and was admitted. Police said he suffered fractures in his skull and jaw, and lacerations to the head.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation and police are gathering witness accounts of the accident. No charges have been filed at this time.
