Hillsborough, NJ, February 21, 2011 – The next meeting of the Hillsborough Democratic Alliance will be held on March 2 at Avalon Assisted Living, 393 Amwell Road in Hillsborough (www.bridgewayseniorcare.com/avalon/index.html), east of Route 206. Light refreshments will be served at 6:45PM. The meeting will begin promptly at 7:00PM and end at 8:30PM. The meeting is open to members and non-members alike.
The agenda for this important meeting includes election of 2011 officers; including President, Vice President, Corresponding Secretary and Recording Secretary. Anyone interested in running for one of these positions should e-mail Meryl Bisberg, Communications Chair ([email protected]) and Mike Goldberg, Acting President ([email protected]) and/or bring the nomination to the floor at the next meeting.
Only members are eligible to vote for officers. A Membership Application can be obtained either at the meeting or in advance via e-mail. Annual 2011 dues are $15 per person or $25 per family.
Alisa Mariani, a Hillsborough resident who has recently joined the Alliance, will be our guest speaker at the conclusion of the business portion of the meeting. Ms. Mariani has been vice president of the Somerset County chapter of the ACLU for the last 20 years, President of the Middlesex County chapter prior to that, an ACLU-NJ Board member and a long-time peace activist. She currently directs a free legal clinic in Somerville which is coordinated through ACLU-NJ, and will be speaking with us about her history in the peace movement, her opinions about the current state of politics in New Jersey and in the nation, and her current work running the free legal clinic.
The Alliance is planning to have many interesting speakers at its monthly meetings in 2011, encouraging like-minded individuals to share in the camaraderie of fellow Democrats.
The Hillsborough Democratic Alliance, which is separate and distinct from the official Hillsborough Democratic Party, focuses on transparency and accountability in local government. It provides all participants with the opportunity to discuss the issues facing Hillsborough and become involved in the process of electing Democrats to the Hillsborough Township Committee as well as county and state offices.
