To the editor:
In response to John Salvetta’s letter (June 23) regarding the “Deplorable faculty turnout at Lawrence graduation:”
If Mr. Salvetta had bothered to check, he would have known that there were many teachers and other staff at graduation, seated in the stands and cheering the kids.
Moreover, many teachers arrived early and spent time with the students before they walked out into the arena for the ceremonies.
In the past three years, Lawrence High School teachers have been invited as guests to graduation.
Although we could choose not to attend graduation, we do attend, we do cheer our kids, talk to them, encourage them, laugh and cry with them.
We take pictures with our students to commemorate the occasion.
Should anyone require proof of our attendance, we the teachers would be happy to share our photographs and memories from every graduation.
Unlike Mr. Salvetta, we do not feel the need to trumpet our love and commitment to our students; we are happy to support them even when the public is not watching.
After all, the kids themselves know how much we care, and that’s all that matters.
