BORDENTOWN TOWNSHIP: Deadline to replace Medina nears

BORDENTOWN TOWNSHIP — The Democratic Municipal Committee has 15 days from Aug. 1 to come up with three nominees to serve out the remaining term of Township Committeeman Jason Medina, who resigned as of July 31.
Jim Cann, the Democratic Municipal Committee chairman, said, “I will probably be one of those” nominees.
Mr. Medina was the lone Democrat on the five-member Township Committee. His term expires at the end of this year. He and Mr. Cann ran unopposed in the June primary for the two available three-year terms on the Township Committee.
The four remaining Township Committee members then have another 15 days to select one of the three nominees, Mayor Michael Dauber said. If they fail to do that in time, the Municipal Committee would make the pick, he said.
Similarly, if the Democratic Municipal Committee does not meet its selection deadline, the Township Committee would pick a Democrat to serve.
Mayor Dauber said he hopes the candidates can be interviewed and a selection made at the Township Committee’s Aug. 22 meeting, noting a decision has to be made by Aug. 30 at the latest.
Mr. Medina submitted his letter of resignation July 11, telling the committee his wife has accepted a two-year assignment with her company that requires the family to relocate to Columbus, Ohio, at the end of the month.
”I am proud to say that my decision to step down was not caused by any scandal or pending criminal investigation, but based entirely on family obligations,” he said at the time.
He concluded, "We’re in this because of genuine interest in public service.”
