HOPEWELL VALLEY: Central High teacher is lauded

The Hopewell Valley Municipal Alliance awarded Lois Fyfe, Central High School teacher, its Volunteer of the Year award at a breakfast hosted by Capital Health Friday.
Ms. Fyfe, who is a wellness educator at the high school, was given the award for “her tireless work on behalf of the young people of Hopewell Valley,” said Alicia Brooks Waltman, spokeswoman.
Ms. Fyfe accepted the award at the event — the annual Hopewell Valley Mayors’ Breakfast — which was provided by Capital Health at its new Hopewell campus, which will open to patients Nov. 6.
The campus is located east of Scotch Road between I-95 and Route 546.
Capital Health CEO and President Al Maghazehe spoke at the event as did the Valley’s three mayors — Paul Anzano, of Hopewell Borough, Anthony Persichilli, of Pennington Borough and James Burd, of Hopewell Township.
The Municipal Alliance is a volunteer organization that works to prevent drug and alcohol abuse among young people and to keep them safe and involved in their communities.
Ms. Fyfe has helped develop programs such as Teen Wellness Day and Hopewell Valley Come Outside and Play! She also created the high school’s Building Bridges Leadership Program, which gives leadership opportunities to girls, and she coordinates Pathfinders, a student-facilitated outdoor education program at the school. She also is the varsity softball and freshman field hockey coach.
”There are no limits to the time Lois commits to our young people,” said Heidi Kahme, Alliance chairwoman, as she presented Ms. Fyfe with the award.
   Ms. Fyfe thanked the group.
”Often students remember not so much the content from their school years as the connections they make, “ she said.
Organizations like HVMA help establish those connections between students, teachers and other adults in their lives.
